    @Karly Noel
    RedRover
    Director of Education and Outreach
    Sacramento, California

    Tell us about you and your history in animal welfare.

    KN: I'm originally from southern California and I'm the Director of Education and Outreach for RedRover based in Sacramento, California. Like many in animal welfare, I wear many hats at my organization. I oversee production for Kind News magazine, the RedRover Readers program while dabbling in Human Resources, Staff Development and Operations.

    Before this role, I was the Education Manager working with the RedRover Readers Social and Emotional Learning/Humane Education program. Before that, I was a Curriculum Specialist and Pre-Kindergarten Teacher for the Phoenix Schools while I worked on my Master’s Degree.

    What's an accomplishment that you are most proud of in your career?

    KN: While serving as the Marketing Chairperson for the Association of Professional Humane Educators (APHE), I lead the rebranding effort and accomplished a complete logo and brand overhaul moving the association from an outdated look to a professional, welcoming design and brand.

    For RedRover, I love the every aw-ha moment people have in our workshops. I am proud of the training experience that I help create.

    Can you tell us more about the RedRover Readers program?

    KN: The RedRover Readers program is a social and emotional learning program designed to promote empathy and critical thinking. RedRover offers online and in-person workshops to show teachers and other educators how to implement the program with their students using high-quality children's picture books, thoughtful questions and activities. We give teachers tools to help empathy development and help students practice responsible decision making skills. The program has been around for 10 years and we've reached almost 70,000 children.

    RedRover has humane-themed resources that support the RedRover Readers program such as our Recommended Books with Humane Themes book list and our Kind News magazine and Empathy App.

    Name something related to shelters and animal welfare that you are super passionate about and want others to learn about?

    KN: I am passionate about ensuring future generations care about animals. Urgent animal care needs is absolutely necessary; so is education. Education is the key to a compassionate future. Education is relationship building, donor cultivation, succession planning, leadership development, the teaching of responsible-decision making. It is critical to the overall animal welfare movement.

    Tell us something about yourself people might be surprised to learn

    KN: I’ve bungee jumped; twice!

    Who is your animal welfare crush?

    KN: I’d like to meet Ellen DeGeneres. She’d be a hoot to work with as she is hilarious. She has major influence as a talk show hostess and she cares about others. I’d also like to meet Betty White someday for similar reasons.

    About RedRover: RedRover staff and volunteers provide temporary emergency sheltering, resources, financial assistance and emotional support when animals and people are in crisis. We empower educators to help kids develop empathy and awareness of animals’ well-being and increase awareness about the importance of the human-animal bond.
