We are going to be getting a flight of dogs from the Bahamas in the near future.  I saw that UC Davis has a protocol for these dogs from 2019.  Just wondering if any shelters that received dogs from the Island can help us with what they found were the challenges and how they handled it.  If anyone has a protocol they would be willing to share that would be great

If you mean the "chill" protocol, that is essentially medication. The Fearful Dogs Project is the place to go for experts in fearful dog rehab.

Sorry I  wasn't clear.  What we are looking for are medical issues that shelters may have faced with these dogs.  We have a robust behavior department and use medication  but we are wondering if other shelters tested these dogs for tick borne diseases, if they saw parvovirus and/or distemper etc.
    thanks for the reply!

Also, it was University of Florida that had the protocol for quarantining the dogs from 2019, not UC Davis

    Shirene,

Is this the University of Florida Maddie's Shelter Medicine protocol for receiving animals from the Bahamas you're referring to?  https://sheltermedicine.vetmed.ufl.edu/wordpress/files/2019/09/UF-Recommendations-for-Receiving-Animals-from-the-Bahamas.pdf

@cynda crawford @Julie Levy Can you connect Shirene with any shelters who received animals from the Bahamas in 2019 or provide any insight you received from those shelters?

    Thanks!

    Hi Shirene,

Most of the dogs transported from the Bahamas to Florida shelters following Hurricane Dorian had Ehrlichia, Anaplasma, and heartworm infections. To my knowledge, none had distemper or parvo.  However, I just received information this week from shelter colleagues in the Bahamas that they are experiencing a big increase in parvo cases and the disease is very severe.

Based on this new information about parvo incidence, I recommend quarantining the Bahamian dogs for at least 7 days.

    Good luck!
