    Hello All!

I came across this article today and thought I would share:

Pet Parent Support Network: Creating a Successful Alternative to Surrender Through a Least Intrusive, Minimally Aversive Approach

When working in the shelter, we would require all wishing to surrender a pet with a disclosed behavior reason to fill out a Behavior and Training online history form. Someone from the Behavior Team would review this form then reach out to that person to provide support, education, and options.

Sometimes options included an appointment with me (DACVB) at no charge or a reduced fee. Sometimes that option was an appointment with our Behavior and Wellness Manager (LVT, KPA-CTP) to triage and provide support.

Over time, we have been able to provide support for and keep many animals in the home rather than surrender them into the shelter. Some we have very frank conversations with about safety, welfare, and euthanasia others just need to look at training and management from a different perspective. Our goal was to reduce surrenders and raise awareness in the community about behavior and behavioral support. Many who reached out didn't even know help was available.

Hi Dr. Calder, thank you for sharing this! This is exactly the approach I want to take in animal rescue.
