    Hello!

Sharing the agendas for the  Maddie's Monday Shelter and Rescue Support Call (LINK TO REGISTER):

Quick Reminder: You can also watch previous recordings and continue the conversation at Maddie's Pet Forum!

    01/10/22

National Update: Right before the new year NACA issued a statement that outlines the many benefits to pets and the people who love them when animal service agencies take the necessary steps to assess each situation individually, match the needs with the appropriate course of care, and work towards case management for all non-emergency intake. Our statement is centered around Appointment Based intakes and though this practice has been around for quite some time and for some is nothing "new", we felt compelled to create a statement to help organizations who are looking to implement.

Session One: Humans understand and engage with the world through stories. Our brains are hard-wired to use narrative as the primary mode for processing ideas. Stories about animals are especially poignant and resonant. That means animal shelters and rescues are perfectly poised to capture the public's attention-and engage people with the work you do. But what's the best way to do that? Arin Greenwood will walk you through some ways to find, develop, and share the stories that will engage the public and the media in your work and your pets.

Session Two: After viewing the Pethealth national data, we know that transports were down in 2021. Join the conversation with an amazing group of panelists, that have created solutions to difficult challenges, and are working in the thick of it when it comes to transport programs. We will be discussing what drives their innovative work, improving transport partnerships, and their vision for the future. Whether you're a source or destination partner, or function as both- you don't want to miss this critical conversation as we delve into the reality of transport programs, how we can evolve and strengthen, and recharge for this upcoming year.

    Speaker Panel:

Carrie Boynton, Executive Director, Animal Adoption Center, Jackson, WY

Jeanine Foucher, Executive Director, Acadiana Animal Aid, Carencro, LA

Heather Hall: Founder, The Underground Dog, Presidio, TX

Jess Outten: Highway to Home Coordinator, Gloucester-Matthews Humane Society, Gloucester, VA

01/17/22 - No Meeting (MLK Day)

    01/24/22

Guest Host: Javier Gutierrez, Animal Control Manager, Downey Care Center, County of Los Angeles

Session One: Co-Sheltering and Animal Welfare Program (CSAW) at GRACE Marketplace - Gainesville, FL Recognizing that the human-animal bond is valuable and worth preserving through times of homelessness, GRACE has become the first "animal-friendly" low-barrier homeless shelter in the region, accepting guests with Service Animals, Emotional Support Animals and Companion Animals. The Co-Sheltering & Animal Welfare Program (CSAW) compliments regular shelter services at GRACE by providing animal accommodations for people entering emergency shelter or visiting campus. Riley Yates, the Animal Welfare Coordinator (AWC), is responsible for coordinating all animal services, providing oversight of animal welfare, and ensuring the health and safety of staff, guests, and visitors. Additionally, the AWC offers outreach and education including counseling on topics such as nutrition, behavior, and responsible ownership.

Session Two:  The idea of managed intake remains a misunderstood and therefore controversial issue in some communities. This has furthered the divide between shelters and rescue groups who feel unfairly overburdened by a shelter that does not accept a particular pet or category of pets. The answer is simple. When a shelter implements managed intake and does not admit a pet it must be done in tandem with a link to resources or the actual resources for options and assistance. In addition, if rescue groups are asked to do more, a reallocation of resources to assist them with care should be done. On the flip side, rescue groups have a reputation of judgemental and closed adoptions that minimize the number of pets they can help through their program. Both stakeholders need to rethink their perspective and goals. But most importantly, both need to communicate more effectively. Join Dr. Sara Pizano from Team Shelter USA as she helps us unpack this very important topic.

    01/31/22

Session One:  It is no coincidence that CARE will be taking over the Maddie's National Call on January 31st, the day before Black History Month begins.

CARE will be discussing how CARE Centers and the CARE Givers Circle work seamlessly together to create a sustainable tool for the community. CARE will also highlight their REDI Certification on Maddie's University and most importantly talk about how YOU can all help. The talk will be led by James Evans, the Founder and CEO of CARE and supported by the staff of CARE.

    02/07/22

Session One: The presentation will discuss the process for how the HASS Facility Guideline document was created and how it aligns with the Elements of HASS. The guideline for facility design creates a new model for a community animal care center with decentralized services. It should have flexible, adaptive spaces that are used as a tool to answer the needs of individual communities.

    Speaker Panel:

    Caty Townsend – Animal Arts

Beau Archer – Humane Rescue Alliance

Dr. Sandra Strong, DVM – Orange County Animal Services

Sara Price – Seattle Area Feline Rescue

Session Two: Marley's Mutts Pawsitive Change Program

    02/14/22

Session One: My Dog Is My Home

Session Two: Join DPFL CEO/Founder Aimee Sadler to share what they learned in our practical application of the science around behavior evaluations. We moved away from battery tests quite some time ago, opting to observe and record behavior via checkpoint systems throughout a dog's stay in the shelter (the Longmont Humane Society). Our lifesaving increased and our length of stay decreased as we learned to work "smarter" while prioritizing quality of life for the dogs and their caretakers!

02/21/22 - No Meeting (Presidents' Day)

    02/28/22

Topic One: The Everycat Health Foundation is an international non-profit that focuses solely on feline health. Through annual grant cycles, they award funding for scientific research to provide a brighter, better future for all cats, including shelter cats, pedigree cats, community cats, your cat, and my cat. In their 53 year history, they have funded more than $8 million in studies and are behind many of the life-saving treatments cats receive today.

Jackie Ott Jaakola is the Executive Director of The Everycat Health Foundation and has thirty plus years' experience in animal welfare.  She spent many years working in marine mammal rescue in Los Angeles before working for Wallis Annenberg  with her efforts helping animals and in the creation of Wallis Annenberg PetSpace.  In 2018, Jackie's focus became feline-specific as she moved to Florida as Executive Director of a cat-only shelter, transitioning to her role at EveryCat in early 2021.

Topic Two: Caitlin Quinn of HeARTs Speak will talk about a new series of communications toolkits, built in collaboration with HASS, that are designed to make it easier to talk about community-focused programs and practices. These comprehensive kits include talking points, customizable graphics, media templates, FAQs, and more. They are built to fit your specific needs, so you can use the tools in any combination that feels right for you, and this short presentation will focus on how you can use them in your organization to better connect with your community.

    03/07/22  Breakout Rooms!

Pet Support Services: Pet owners can access pet support services, including housing, medical and behavioral support, as well as food and supplies, to help keep the human-animal family together. Hosted By: Jill Henke, Director of Community Programming, Gateway Pet Guardians

Return to Home: The organization operates a comprehensive lost pet reunification service to successfully get most roaming pets home without them having to enter the shelter system. Hosted by: Gina Knepp, National Shelter Engagement Director, Michelson Found Animals

Intake-To-Placement/ Foster Centric: Pets physically entering the shelter have outcome pathways identified before or at the time of intake, so in-shelter length of stay is drastically reduced and the majority of pets who enter the shelter system are placed in foster homes within hours or days of arrival and foster pets are adopted directly from their foster homes. Kelly Duer, Foster Care Specialist, Maddie's Fund

Supported Self-Rehoming: Pet owners who can no longer keep their pets are given the tools to safely and quickly rehome their own pets with ongoing support from shelter staff or volunteers. Lucy Fernandez, PASS Program Coordinator, Austin Pets Alive!

Field Services and Public Safety: Animal control and field services protect public health and safety, enforce animal cruelty and neglect laws, and aim to address the root causes of animal problems. They provide support, information, access to care and resources to the community.Jerrica Owen, CAWA, Director Partnerships and Programs, National Animal Care & Control Association
