Hello Fellow Passionate Animal Welfare Professionals,

My name is Dr. Sharmaine Miller and I am from The Johns Hopkins School of Public Health in Baltimore, MD. I hold a PhD in Stress Biology from Penn State, an Applied Animal Behavior Certificate from the University of Washington, and am currently a Postdoctoral Fellow in a One Health Lab at JHSPH. I am leading the Covid Welfare (CoWelf) project and we are recruiting animal care workers and volunteers to complete a short 15 to 20 minute survey (link below). Please see and feel  free to share the below to co-workers and colleagues. Thank You! PS The study website is listed below, and our project flyer is attached.

    --

Update: Survey will close during mid to late January.

    Hello,

I reaching out regarding a research study on identifying, assessing, and addressing welfare-related changes and challenges experienced by pet-owners and animal care organizations across diverse US communities, during the COVID-19 pandemic.

My name is Dr. Sharmaine Miller and I am a Postdoctoral Fellow from The Johns Hopkins School of Public Health in Baltimore, MD.

You were identified as a key stakeholder because you are an employee or volunteer at an animal care organization, i.e. an animal shelter, rescue, or control facility. Therefore, you are being asked to participate in this study because you have expertise and a valuable perspective on your affiliated organization's challenges and pet-owner struggles of your local community, during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The goal of this work is to better understand the circumstances surrounding these events via the perspectives of animal care organization workers, to effectively support them, organization operations, and their efforts in protecting the well-being of pets and their owners. The well-being of racial/ethnic pet-owners is of high interest for this study, due to these populations facing daily pre-existing public health stressors in the form of health and well-being disparities, compared to White populations. Therefore, this investigation is desired because these populations of pet-owners may especially be struggling during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The first piece of this study involves completing a survey. This survey should take a total of 15 to 20 min, and needs to be completed in one sitting. In the survey we request the address of your affiliated organization or the address for region of service (if online-based) to be able to compare obtained survey data to existing community metrics available via US census public databases, such as community demographic data and eviction rates. This data (including address) will be used only for the purpose of research and will not be shared publicly. The researchers will own the data but will share summaries arising from project results to your organization.

At the end of the survey, you will be asked if you would like to provide your contact information to complete a future data form (paper copy or via online) regarding numbers of adoptions, transfers, and relinquishments at your organization, and/or participating in a future video interview opportunity. If you would like to complete the data form on behalf of your organization or participate in an interview, we ask you to provide contact information at the end of this survey. This data will be kept private, and secure. Participants who elect to participate in the data form portion of this study will receive an email message explaining the process in the near future.

If an organization has multiple locations and if you're a volunteer or employee at both, you may complete a survey for each location. Please answer questions to the best of your ability. Multiple individuals from the same organization (technicians, assistants, and management) can complete the survey, so if you have other co-workers and colleagues that you feel would also provide a valuable perspective, please feel free to widely distribute this email.

If an organization has multiple locations and an individual volunteers or works at each location, they can then complete a survey for each location if they would like to. If you would like more information on participation in this study, please let us know through the contact routes listed below. We are happy to answer questions about this study.
