Advise for rehoming? convos with owners, platforms, follow up?

We're looking to start a more formal rehoming program for pet owners who are looking to surrender. We try to talk to them and see if we can "resolve" the issue first, but some need to find new homes and fast. It always feels like an it's an emergency situation, like they need to cat or dog out of their house immediately. Sometimes I feel like we're going to see that dog/cat tethered to the front door the next morning.

    1. any advice on getting owners to buy-into a rehoming strategy/program that may not happen overnight?

    2. do folks use their organization websites or adopt-a-pet or both or other platforms? what seems the most successful?

    3. how long is it actually taking these pets to get re-homed? Once you get them "set up" with postings, etc. (?) do you track it?

and of course, any stellar SOPs or templates or scripts or how to's would be very helpful!

    Thanks all -

Hi Cheryl! So I can provide some basic answers, but I want to tag in @Lucy Fernandez who is the leader of the supported rehoming working group for the HASS project. She is the go to expert on this subject, so I will let her provide all the insight.

What I will say for our shelter is we try everything we can !

We explain that there is a list ahead of them of people in the exact same situation, and in order to make sure their pet (and all surrendered pets) has a positive outcome, we need to manage the flow of animals into our shelter, and then offer to post the pet on our website (and consider them owned fosters) to hopefully expedite the process of rehoming.

I have heard Home 2 Home is the most effective, which will be onboarding new shelters in the next month or two. I would sign up on their website to be notified when that happens.

    3. how long is it actually taking these pets to get re-homed? Once you get them "set up" with postings, etc. (?) do you track it?
I don't have this data, but I bet Lucy does!!!
