  • 1.  Best practices re lost & found animals?

    What are your shelters and rescues suggesting as best practices when people find stray dogs and cats in their community? EG,
    • Take to shelter which may or may not have appointments for intake?
    • Keep at finder's home if possible for required stray hold. If finder is not a rescue, then what should finder do?
    • Keep at finder's home if possible, notify local shelters, post flyers, go around neighborhood, and post on social media, inc lost & found pages, Craigslist, Nextdoor, etc?
    • Do any shelters have a place on their websites to post lost and found pets that are searched by shelter staff for a match?
    • Do shelter staff search social media for matches for lost pets?
    • Do you have local Facebook admins who search for matches?
    • What else?

    Nicole, thank you for link. If no walk ins are allowed, how do people check the shelter for lost pets?

    Do you accept strays found by the public or do you encourage the public to find the owners?

    In order to follow Covid-19 protocol walk-in foot traffic is not permitted at this time. Our staff is very active in answering emails, phone calls and social media messages pertaining to lost and found pets. We encourage owners missing their pets to look through our lost and found database and will schedule appointments for those needing to walk through our shelter.

    We do accept strays found by the public as long as they are found within our jurisdiction.  If a person finds a stray animal we advise that after 24 hours they are required to bring that animal into the shelter for its stray holding period. However, within those first 24 hours they can legally hold that animal while in search for its owner.
