We just learned that the emergency vet clinic in our area is no longer providing services from 10 pm to 6 am.  I'm wondering how others address emergency veterinary incidents that arise in the absence of a 24-hr clinic. This has implications for how we handle field services calls but also for medical concerns that arise in foster care and for owned pets that may deteriorate/suffer/perish in absence of prompt medical attention. Do you have vet staff on-call or contract with a local vet clinic for afterhours services? Are there other options?

    Hi Chris,

We are based in the Lake Tahoe area and do not have 24hr vet care anywhere around the lake or in our town (our vets just don't have the demand to make it feasible). We have to send after hour emergency fosters to either Carson City, NV (if they are in the South Lake Tahoe area) or Reno, NV (if they are in the Truckee/North Lake Tahoe area). It's not a perfect and it can be hard when snow (or any type of weather) is also involved, but it's worked out so far.

    Hi Chris,
Is this 24 hour vet that you utilize, the only one in the area or the only facility that you have established a working relationship with? Our organization has one primary 24 hour vet that we use consistently, but we have established relationships with other 24 hour vet facilities that our facilities have used in critical situations. Just recently our state was in a state of emergency due to weather, and we had critical patients that needed round the clock care, the 24 hour vet we primarily used stopped taking transfers at a certain time so we reached out to another facility that was on the other side of town and they were able to provide them with the care they needed. If there are other 24 hour vets in the surrounding area, even if they are an hour away, maybe reach out to see if they would be open to establishing a working relationship with your organization/facility as an additional resource for not only the facility you work with but also the pet owners in the communities.
