We rely heavily on Peanut Butter in our shelter (enrichment for dogs).  Unfortunately, it's become very hard to clean off of surfaces and the topic recently came up about how our frequent use of it in our dog kennels may make it not safe for anyone with peanut allergies walking into our kennels.  We are wondering if others have found the latter to be of concern (for staff, volunteers or the public) as well if other shelters use peanut butter a lot or have an alternate you prefer.

We posted signs at main entrance and doors to dog rooms letting visitors know that we used peanut in enrichment items.

We use it often with our more excitable dogs. We just wait till right before we close to give it to them.

Try out a different nut butter. Almond butter has worked on every dog I've tried it on.

We use so much spray cheese (like Cheez-wiz) it's like we have stock in the company.  We buy the store-brand and it's about  $3 a can. We use the human version, not the dog version. Our vet approved.  We haven't seen an increase in diarrhea. We use it for: kongs, distracting dogs for bathing, leashing, whatever, treat plates, walking jumpy mouthy dogs, and walking reactive dogs. 10/10 stars.

We use spray cheese and peanut butter.  We used to hang frisbees on the dog kennels with peanut butter on them, but we did stop that practice due to people having peanut allergies. The dogs seem to prefer the spray cheese

We also use spray cheese, but not much.  The peanut butter  is cheaper and goes further.  With the number of dogs we have relying on spray cheese seems like it would be expensive.  How are you all using spray cheese?  We use it mostly when doing medical exams, vaccines, etc.  We use peanut butter for daily enrichment.

We use it very generously-dog walking (reactive or mouthy dogs get assigned their own can), behavior management, distraction, etc.  We do use PB in kongs but a lot of times dog staff will just use cheese because it's easier. The caveat is that we are a small shelter- 2500 animals a year or so. I did  find a giant 30 gallon tub of cheese product on webrestaurant and it was $169 for 30# of fake cheese. That's like .35 an ounce or so. You could put it in gootubes but even I have to admit a 30# tub of cheese, while hilarious, is also pretty unwieldy.

We have also used just plain donated canned dog food in kongs in place of PB. It's much easier to clean than PB or cheese. For managing difficult kennel behavior. I have also put canned dog food in a reuseable tube for managing a dogs behavior. My only beef (lol) with the canned food is that obviously it's not shelf stable once open. Most of our facility is outdoors so for the dogs that need constant treats while moving to help with jumpy/mouthy or reactivity, this doesn't work.

EDIT: Wait, I just reread the giant tub o cheese is for popcorn. It's not a cheez whiz substitute. Sorry! I did see some bulk bags of cheez whiz, but that's even more unwieldy than a tub o' cheese.
