  • 1.  How do you educate adopters about heartworm + dogs?

    Posted 09-09-2021 02:03 PM
Posting this on behalf of @Shelly Simmons, CAWA and hoping you all can share how you handle this in your organization:

We are struggling with the best way to educate people that adopt a heartworm positive dog without information overload. We treat adopted heartworm positive dogs for free at our clinic after they are adopted into the home. If you have a stellar method of educating without overloading and a fail-safe way to get adopters to show up to HW consults, exams, injections, follow ups, etc. please share!!! We are in a high HW+ region so it's not unusual for us to adopt one or more HW positive dogs every day!

Hey @Shelly Simmons, CAWA.... so we actually changed our protocol where we provide the HW injection meds to the adopters private vet clinic instead of us doing the injections here at the shelter for continuity of care. If someone cannot afford the injection fees at their vet, we will help with that with one of our partner clinics.

With that being said, when someone wants to adopt a HW positive dog, they are given a brochure to review (see attached) and a supervisor is paged to the lobby to provide a brief heartworm counseling after they read the brochure. We tell them they will get the doxy when they take the pet home, and they will get a form to give to their vet to request the remaining medication from us directly. From there our part of the process is complete.

Love this brochure, thank you Alexis!  I will share your protocol with our vet team to get their feedback.  Appreciate your help.
