    Unanswered question from the chat:

"I would love to learn more about how you determined the amount of funding needed to host one of the clinics. How do you convince private vet practices to donate their time or services?"

The amount of funding needed to host a clinic depends on several factors, including the number of animals you plan to help, the services you'd like to offer, and what medical issues the vet is comfortable treating. It's best to assess these details with your vet to create an accurate budget.

When it comes to convincing private vet practices to donate their time or services, relationships can make all the difference. If you know people who have special connections with local veterinarians, their support in making introductions or advocating for your cause can be incredibly helpful. Highlighting the impact on the community and showing appreciation for their contributions can also encourage practices to get involved. Many vets are willing to support a cause that aligns with their values and offers a meaningful way to give back.

For Project Pet and Bay Area One Health Coalition, we have coordinated with the leadership from individual organizations that contribute to the One Health clinics on monthly calls, during which we exchange valuable data like budget necessities.  Though early in our partnership, each organization is familiar with their budget needs and can collaborate on our joint needs and collect the data necessary to go after funding opportunities to support our efforts.

The private vet practices have been difficult but have mostly responded to our ability to remove friction from the operational side of the clinics we ask them to participate in.  The more we are able to help provide assistance for them to show up easily and do their work the more participation we seemed to receive.  Our local shelter OAS has also been extremely helpful in securing relationships with local vets and the volunteer community that make the clinic possible.

    Unanswered question from the chat:

"Have your organizations or could you point us towards other organizations you've worked with that have had success changing landlord's policies on animals in apartments or is that kind of a non-starter?"

A great organization to connect with for this type of advocacy is HeartLA. They have experience working on similar issues and can likely provide guidance or direct you to other groups that have successfully changed landlord policies regarding animals in apartments. You can learn more about them and their work at HeartLA's website.

Thanks to the 164+ people and paws who joined us on today's Community Conversations call! The recording is now available to watch on-demand. Below you'll find a recap of today's call and the resources shared.

    Call Recap

    • Question of the Day: Share a memorable experience you've had while working with animals or people in your community. What did you learn from it?
      • "Too many!" - Christina Avila
      • "Working directly with owners of companion animals to educate them on community resources available to them, such as pet food banks and low cast veterinary care." - Natalie Ahwesh
      • "We distributed 10,000 lbs. of pet food at a mass distribution event with our local Foodbank. I had a volunteer approach me and ask how to donate. She said when she fell on hard times, she received food from us, and she told herself when she got back on her feet she would donate to our organization. She said now was that time!" - Jessie Sullivan
      • "I went to a resort in Punta Cana where there were stray cats on the premises. It was inspirational how the vacationers came together to care for these cats. One kitten was badly injured and was on its last legs and one cat rescuer and a college student and I worked together to get this kitten veterinary care. I was so excited to have passionate people come out of nowhere to help." - Marian Morcos
      • "I learn from my experience is it takes time for people to trust me. So be patient!" - Julielani Chang
      • "Most recently a super senior kitty adoption! A 10-year-old boy fell in love with this kitty who had lots of facial scars but also lots of love to give. This experience reminded me of the beauty of bonds between children and animals." - Rebecca Barry
      • "Helping Veterinarian students run a Street Dog Coalition Day. Which helps homeless or at-risk of homeless get vaccines and spay/ neuter vouchers for their animals. During this our program learned of many new ways to help provide low-cost care for those in need." - Ana Alexander
