    Hi everyone!

I am Kelly Duer, Foster Care Specialist for Maddie's Fund and  co-lead for Human Animal Support Services' Foster working group.

We've been learning from shelters running high-volume foster care and compiling resources, strategies, templates and more into this toolkit.

If you have been searching for resources on how to get started with expanding foster care at your organization, recruiting new fosters, reallocating staff toward foster care, caring for 50% or more of your pets in foster homes and more, look no further!

View our The Foster-Centric Model Toolkit created by Human Animal Support Services in collaboration with The Association for Animal Welfare Advancement and The Humane Society of the United States to learn more.

Even in the best circumstances, animal shelters are stressful places for pets. Animals housed in kennels are susceptible to catching contagious illnesses and experiencing kennel stress and behavioral decline. Additionally, housing animals in kennels for weeks or months is expensive and time consuming for staff and volunteers. A foster home is the ultimate, low-stress environment in which to care for shelter pets. Foster care saves lives, eliminates euthanasia due to lack of space and capacity issues, and gets more animals out of the system alive.

Please use this thread to share feedback on the toolkit and ask any questions you have. If we missed something important, please let us know so we can work on including it-- the toolkit is a living document and we want it to be as useful for you as possible!

This is so impressive, thanks for doing this work!  Do you have any partners that foster and then reunite the pets with their guardian?  Or is this mainly from foster-to-adopt organizations?

    Cheers!

Yes-- there are a lot of HASS shelters running safety net foster programs that assist owners with temporary care, while ultimately reuniting them with their pets. Information on these programs is in the Keeping Families Together toolkit: https://www.humananimalsupportservices.org/resources/temporary-placement/#Temporary-Foster

You can find a video on Souris Valley Humane Society's program at https://youtu.be/aRdvpW6LONI The foster working group has a few short presentations on other programs lined up this month as well.
