  • 1.  Juvenile Detention Program

    Posted 07-19-2022 07:28 AM
    Hi There,

Are there any organizations that run programs with juvenile detention centers and pet-assisted therapy teams? We are exploring the idea of starting up a program and want to see what other shelters/orgs are doing and how their programs are run.

    1. How often do teams visit?
    2. What do teams do when they are there?
    3. Do your teams work with individuals or in group settings?
    4. What activities do you do?

Any info would be much appreciated. Thanks!

    Erin,
I love that you're exploring the idea of starting up a program like this! I don't know anything about this personally but it looks like Naperville Humane has a Project Pawsitive Future program you may want to check out. Scroll down their webpage to the Project Pawsitive Future section: https://www.naperhumane.org/pet-therapy.

@Marissa Farrand and @Michelle Lenz, can you share more about Naperville Humane's program and answer Erin's questions above? I'm excited to learn more, too! Thank you!

The best person to answer questions about our Project Pawsitive Future Program is Kristen Funk. Kristen is the creator of the program and our executive director. Her email address is kfunk@naperhumane.org.

Ooh, and one more! Coulee Region Humane Society has an Ambassadors of Love Pet Therapy Program that lists juvenile detention centers as one of the locations they support: https://www.couleehumane.com/ambassadors-of-love

We have quite a few forum members from Coulee Region Humane Society:
@Arika Arndt, @Elizabeth Brohaugh, @Megan Kendhammer, @Megan Overholt, @Nena Vavricka or @Stephanie Jankowski, can any of you shed some light on your program for Erin? Thank you!

    Hi Erin!

As Kim mentioned we do indeed have a Pet Therapy Program. All dogs that go through the program go through our AKC Canine Good Citizen course and have received their certification. All non-dogs (we get the occasional cat or rabbit pet therapy teams) are temperament tested.  They go to schools for humane education programs, libraries for reading programs, nursing homes, hospitals, juvenile halls, community programs,  and probably more I'm not think of. The person who is the head of that program is our Community Engagement Coordinator, Erin Olson. She would be the best one to answer any questions you have. Her email is erin.olson@couleehumane.com.

    Hope that helps!

    Hi Erin!

While it's not a pet-assisted therapy program, Marley's Mutts has a prison program called Pawsitive Change and they have been working with a girls juvenile detention facility. You can learn more about their program in general: https://www.marleysmutts.org/pawsitivechange and on that page there's an email to reach out to for more info.

    Good luck with your program!
