    Posted 03-01-2024 10:30 AM

In the very early planning stage of establishing a public education/outreach type program for a municipal shelter. Hoping to initially focus on responsible pet ownership and will also need to incorporate education on feral cat issues and TNR (as there is a huge feral cat population in the city, as well as many uneducated pet owners/a low income demographic.) Has anyone any experience starting such a program? Should we focus more narrowly to begin with (there are  4 of us-all volunteers- that will be starting/delivering this program), say on pets OR feral cats, not both? Does anyone know of resources (such as Alley Cat Allies for the feral component) that would be helpful? Any sort of info, advice, etc. will be most appreciated!

    Hi Lynda,

We are a small group of volunteers.  I participated in Maddie's course on Humane Education - we have put together a course to present to children at our local library.  We are waiting for warmer weather, so we can be outside.   We focused on Humane Education as - we can incorporate pet care information in the from of handouts and start with a younger generation to build for the future.

    Hi Connie,

We have done something similar for elementary school children for several years, and we are now looking to expand to the adult population. Thank you for your input-I will revisit the Maddie's materials!

    Hi Lynda,
We have partnered with the homeless shelter to hand out care instruction sheets.  We covered topics like fresh water,  heartworm preventive,  alternatives to chaining their pet, the risk of not containing the pet.   Civic organizations are also great groups to present programs.

Hi Connie, do you mind sharing your syllabus for your Humane Education or the link to Maddie's course?  Did you take your course outside with warmer weather? Which format gave you more participant - library vs outside. Thanks

    Hi Lynda,

I would look at the resources on the Community Cats Podcast website- their main focus is TNR and reducing the feral cat population. They have a lot of great resources and grants available.
