Session Topic: Informed Insights: 10 Tips for Evaluating and Using Research

Guest Speaker: Seana Dowling-Guyer, M.S. Associate Director, Center for Shelter Dogs, Tufts University

With new research shared at an increasingly fast pace, it can be challenging to identify quality studies and useful results. The proliferation of questionable pay-to-publish models has resulted in an alarming surge of low-quality and even erroneous research. This presentation will share 10 practical tips for evaluating research critically, even if you don’t have a science background. Learn ways to assess research credibility, spot red flags, and extract useful applications from research findings. By becoming a critical consumer of research, you’ll be better able to use research for informed decision-making.

About the Presenter:

Seana Dowling-Guyer is the Associate Director of Tufts Collaborative (Center) for Shelter Dogs at Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University and teaches in the M.S. in Animals and Public Policy program. Seana is interested in the intersection of animal behavior and people’s perceptions of that behavior, particularly how our attitudes and knowledge of animal behavior impact animal welfare and behavior. Her research examines how to improve the welfare of dogs in shelters and support dogs and other companion animals in the home and community. She also investigates trends in animal sheltering. Seana’s interest in people’s perceptions of animal behavior has recently expanded to the area of human dimensions of wildlife. In her personal time, Seana is an avid nature and wildlife photographer, often joined by her husband and four children who complain about her frequent stops during a hike for “just one more photo”. A long-time cat parent, Seana now takes care of four busy ferrets while her daughter is away at college.

About Maddie's Monthly Behavior Connection:
Join us on the fourth Thursday of every month as we talk about dog and cat behavior - supporting pets in our community and animal shelters. Each month, we hear from speakers about topics of interest to our group, such as behavior medications, modifying animal behavior, assessing and improving animal welfare, and how organizations successfully provide behavior support to dogs and cats.

Who should join: Animal welfare staff and volunteers who are interested in dog and cat behavior, and everyone who works to keep pets out of shelters and in homes.
