    Mike Cavanaugh forwarded your email to me. I think the idea of using microchip numbers could work well. The only issues I can see might be:

    1. They are extremely variable in formatting and there wouldn’t be a standard length as an ID
    2. Confusion does happen on our pet microchip lookup between the letter “O” versus the number “0”, lower case letter “l” (L) versus uppercase letter “I” (i) and the number 1.
    3. I have heard of instances where a shelter couldn’t find a chip originally, and re-chipped the dog, resulting in multiple chips in one dog

     

    Even with those potential issues, I still think using a microchip number is a great idea.
