I'm curious what other shelters' medical staffing levels are in comparison to their intake.  Anyone able to tell me what their annual intake is, number of veterinarians, number of vet techs and how many spay/neuter surgeris they perform in-house?  Helpful to know if you're open-admission as well.

    Hi, Danielle
Thank you for posting this question as this is an area I am working on as well. Below are our stats from 2017.
    Two shelters- Limited admission
    4,739 intakes and animals served
    1 full time shelter vet
    3,466 surgeries performed
2 contract vets for s/n (sx performed three days a week)
    1 volunteer vet for dentals (1 day/week)
    3 FT Vet Techs
    2 PT Vet Techs
    1 FT Vet Asst
    2 PT Vet Asst
    8 Volunteers for meds team

We are looking to grow our team in 2019 to accommodate new programs at our new consolidated shelter. It will be helpful to see what others are doing. Thanks!

    Sam

Hi! The Phase 2 audit of our local shelter, LBACS was published a few weeks ago. They specifically included an analysis on vet staff per animal and cited a benchmarking study they did with 9 comparable shelters. They cited 75-300 animals per vet and 34-163 animals per vet support staff. Here is the link http://www.cityauditorlauradoud.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/Animal-Care-Services-Phase-Two.pdf

Hope this helps! Please let us know what you find. This would be a fascinating benchmark to know

We are a limited admission cat shelter with 3,300 intake per year. We do about 2,600 spay/neuter surgeries per year (half in-house and half public) plus ~100 dentals and ~50 other surgeries (amputations, mass removals, enucleations, etc.). We have one full-time lead vet who does medicine and admin/management five days a week and part-time vets who do surgery/dentals 3-4 days/week. We have one full-time CVT and several veterinary assistants who assist with surgery and daily treatments.
