Do you Snap combo test pregnant cats before they have the kittens? Always?

    Hi,

I was wondering if all pregnant cats brought in as stray are given a snap combo before going into foster to have her kittens. At our shelter, most of the time wait until she gets spayed if all appears normal. Thoughts?

    Thanks

    Karen

At my shelter, we do combo test pregnant cats that are going into foster. 1. It's helpful for foster homes to know that they have a reasonably healthy cat. 2. A lot of our cat foster homes have cats already and we want the foster family to feel okay if the resident cats meet the foster cat (we usually discourage integration into the household with pregnant mama's but things happen!)

If the cat is in an early state of pregnancy, we opt to spay them. Until they hit the adoption floor, most of our holding cages are single so it's not super vital to know their viral state.
