The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Centers for Disease Control (CDC) have issued updates to an ongoing investigation into a suspected link between human Salmonella infections and pig ear pet treats. Both the FDA and CDC are advising customers to avoid purchasing or feeding any pig ear treats until further notice.
While no PetSmart products have been recalled or directly linked to any illnesses, based on the recommendations of the FDA and CDC and out of an abundance of caution for the health and safety of people and pets, we have removed all pig ear products from our stores and online at PetSmart.com.
Salmonella can affect both human and animal health. According to the CDC, people infected with Salmonella may develop diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps. If you have come into contact with a pig ear pet treat and believe you may be showing symptoms of a Salmonella infection, contact your health care provider. Pets do not always display symptoms when infected with Salmonella, but signs may include vomiting, diarrhea (which may be bloody), fever, loss of appetite and/or decreased activity level. If your pet has these symptoms, promptly consult your veterinarian.
The FDA advises pet parents to dispose of any pig ear treats they may have at home in a secure container where animals cannot access it. Additionally, customers should wash their hands thoroughly after handling potentially contaminated products and disinfect all surfaces that may have been exposed.
