  • 1.  New Mexico Fires

    Hello all -

New Mexico is battling two major fires that are impacting people and pets across the north central part of the state. I work at Española Humane, a small shelter (23 large dog kennels, 8 small dog/puppy kennels and 38 cat kennels), that is located roughly between the two fires. A neighboring community to the south, Los Alamos, was alerted yesterday to "ready" status in preparation for evacuation.

On Sunday, we transferred in 21 cats/kittens from a shelter located directly in the path of the fire; another organization arranged for boarding for the shelter dogs. Yesterday, Monday, May 3 we took in another 21 pets on top of the population of 53.  We are participating in Bissell's "Empty the Shelter" adoption promotion and our foster team is working feverishly to place pets in foster; with the uncertainty of the fires, it is more difficult than usual to place our pets.

We are searching for transport partners to help with our current population as we prepare for an influx of displaced pets. If you are able to help or can connect us with a group or individual who can, please contact me directly as replying to this thread may be delayed.

Thank you in advance for your support!
