Jeanette,
Thank you for your response, that does help clarify things more for me. Ideally I offer vets a " day rate" This day rate is anywhere from $325-$650. The amount that is given is determined on how many hours the vet works and what they usually charge. I am ususually closser to the higher range because the vets are working a full day. I think if a vet is just helping out a few hours when theyh are not busy then I think starting at $325 would be a good place to start to give them a stipend for a few hours of work. If they are working a decent amount of hours then I would offer closer to the higher range. It all depends on how many hours the vets are working and the level of cases that they see. Are they seeing urgent animals that are really sick or just your basic shelter illnesses such as URI, goopy eyes, skin issues, ear infections? Please let me know if this info helps. If not I am happy to provide more clarity.

Subject: Stipend for volunteer DVMs
Hello Marissa, thank you for your response and questions. We are a new shelter in a rural area. Our local veterinarians are very busy but want to help. We want to show our appreciation of the time they are giving us with a stipend. DVMs will originally help define intake/vaccine/deworming protocols. Then do exams as needed, provide rx and medical care as needed. We do have a clinic and will perform spays and neuters in house for shelter animals. Long term we plan to offer a full time position. But like I said the stipend now is for appreciation and thank you for their time.
