  • 1.  Spending money to increase adoptions

    Posted 08-25-2021 10:46 AM
So we just got a nice donation to help "increase adoptions" and are discussing as a team the way we want to use that money. Some of the ideas we have come up with are:

    • Paid search engine promotion- so when someone types in "pet store"  "buy a dog" "dog breeder" "adopt a pet" etc, we will come up first on the list. We already ask adopters how they heard about us, and the number one way is search engine results, so we think this will help boost our largest adoption source even more, and we can track it which is great too.
    • We are going to send adopters a "free adoption referral coupon" that they can give to a friend or family member to encourage them to adopt at no cost.
    • We will do boosted facebook posts related to adoption and fostering.
Who else has other ideas on how to use donations to boost adoptions?? Let's get a great list of innovative ideas going here!

    Hey Alexis!

I think the ways you bullet pointed are great ideas on how to increase adoptions. I'll add a few more for you to consider.

    • More adoption events. Specifically events that are within the zip code that most of your shelter's intake comes from . I know this can be difficult with current COVID considerations but I as soon as you're able to, this should be strongly considered.
    • Incentivize adoptions: One shelter I work with just partnered with their local zoo to give a 4 pack of zoo tickets to every family that adopted. Another is offering a year of free vaccines.
    • Create adoption gift bags. These could include, first bag of food, toys, a bed, and maybe even a crate.
Keep up the good work and if you have any other ideas that work out, I'd love to hear about them!

    Hey @Alexis Pugh

I always have foster care on the brain... is it possible to do a HUGE Short-Term Foster push with the hypothesis that these usually lead to increased adoption numbers? Or do these "increased adoptions" have to be "directly from shelter"?

Hey Amber- so we are pushing fosters hard. We mention fostering in like 60% of all public communications (according to @Kelly Duer who did a quick little audit of our social) and always keep that top of messaging, so we are trying to find some other ways to get more eyes on.
