Hi Ingrid,
This paper gives us a lot to think about! First, i love how the authors describe 'behavioral incompatibilities' instead of 'behavior concerns', 'problems' or 'issues', because in reality most of the behaviors we are seeing are NORMAL behavior, just ones that we don't love! The biggest criticism i've heard about this paper from others, is that as shelters collectively do a better job of successfully rehoming animals, well-managed shelters are seeing higher levels of intake of dogs with more significant behavioral incompatibilities :), because the 'easier' are often rehomed before they enter the shelter system (which is great news!!). Janis Bradley presented about this paper at a Human Animal Support Services Friday call a month or two ago, and she'll also be presenting at the
Big Dog Masterclass at the end of March.
BTW, thanks for all you're doing for the dog world through Chaser and Dr Pilley's legacy!
