May 2022 Resource Drive: Behavior / Training

  • 1.  May 2022 Resource Drive: Behavior / Training

    Posted 05-04-2022 01:51 PM

The focus for our resource drive this month is dog & cat behavior / training!

Since effective training involves shelter/rescue staff/volunteers and the pet parent, we are collecting resources that can be shared either internally with staff and volunteers or externally with members of your community. We're looking to share everything with regard to behavior - SOPs, training materials, kennel signs, behavior plans, etc.

You Can Participate In Two Ways:

    1. Upload/Share Behavior or Training Resources on this thread
    2. Reply with a request for a specific Behavior or Training Resource you NEED

What Type of Resources Should You Share?

    • External-facing (e.g., handouts on resource guarding, educational webcasts for the public, on-site or virtual training opportunities your organization offers, etc.)
    • Internal-facing (e.g., training protocols for staff/volunteers, SOPs, monitoring forms, behavior modification protocols, welfare assessments, etc.)

Where Will All the Behavior/Training Resources be Stored? How do I view them?

We have several folders in the MPF Resource Library. Click on the links below to open the folders and view the resources. We will continue to add to these folders as members share their resources.

Share & You'll Be Entered To Win $50

Everyone who uploads a file, shares a resource on this thread or replies with information on behavior/training that your organization offers during the month of May will be entered to win a $50 gift card to Amazon, Petco or PetSmart (winner's choice). Start sharing now!

    Pro-Tips for sharing resources:

    • Use the "Upload File" button when replying to this thread to attach a file. We encourage you to attach the file versus hyperlinking to the file whenever possible. Files that are attached to discussion threads are automatically added to the Maddie's Pet Forum Resource Library so attaching helps make the resource searchable and improves accessibility within the forum.
    • Yes, you can share resources that your organization did not create. Sharing is caring and this applies to resources too! Make sure the creator allows the resource to be shared publicly and be sure to give credit to the creator or source organization.

Developed by Kathy Sdao and discussed in her book "Plenty In Life Is Free", SMART x50 is an easy way to teach humans to teach their companion animal new behaviors.  It's the ground floor to introducing capturing and shaping. We love teaching this to all our adopters and fosters and the results have been joyful. Relationships are built from humans reinforcing their companion animals for doing the things they already do naturally. It's a great way to train the human eye to look for the behaviors we love.  When we do that, there is less of a need and propensity to look for behaviors we don't like.

Here is another handout we distribute quite often (along with a copy of Doggie Language by Lili Chin), not just for fosters or adopters of shy dogs but of all dogs as the information is applicable and useful in general.

And lastly, at the start of the pandemic, the IAABC Foundation put together several documents for trainers and their clients.  Attached is the IAABC Dog Trainer Handbook which includes basic manners and puppy kindergarten step by step instructions.

The handbook along with other resources are available by the IAABC here: https://m.iaabc.org/crisis-response/

    Internal-facing Dog Behavior Resources:

GoodPup Partnership Program: GoodPup is a national positive-reinforcement dog training service with a free partnership program designed to support rescue organizations. GoodPup matches clients with professional dog trainers for video training sessions. Through the partnership program, dog owners in your community receive a free week of training followed by an exclusive discount, and your rescue receives referral donations for each customer. Visit https://goodpup.com/shelters or email shelters@goodpup.com to become a partner. This program is offered at no cost to shelters and rescues.

GoodPup Webinars: GoodPup's free webinar series covers topics such as body language, enrichment, compassion resilience, leash reactivity and more. These webinars are free and accessible to everyone in your community including staff, volunteers, fosters, and adopters. View recordings here: https://goodpup.com/webinar-series

GoodPup Scholarships: Have you been looking for a way for donors to sponsor dog training for dogs in your care? GoodPup Scholarships are gift certificates that donors or shelters can buy to give pre-purchased GoodPup training to adopters, foster parents, or surrender prevention clients. Dogs that enroll with GoodPup Scholarships are routed to senior trainers. When specialized training is needed, our behavior team creates customized behavior treatment plans for these dogs. If a behavior plan is created, we share that with the rescue that provided the scholarship. To learn more, please visit https://goodpup.com/shelters/order-scholarships or email shelters@goodpup.com

    External-facing Dog Behavior Resources:

    For website/email:

GoodPup provides our adopters, fosters, and community members with convenient, affordable, science-based dog training. GoodPup training is fast and effective, because it's designed for how dogs (and dog parents) learn. Their trainers are fully invested in you and your dog. Chat with them anytime, as much as you need. They are there to provide individualized support, advice, and motivation, and are as excited as you are to celebrate your dog's transformation. The best part? All rescue adopters get discounted rates and GoodPup donates to our rescue for every person who signs up for training!
To receive a free week of GoodPup training, follow this link: [LINK]*

*If your shelter does not yet have a GoodPup link, please contact shelters@goodpup.com to get one.

Here is one of my favorite human-side-of-the-leash training videos, from Safe Harbor Farm's SMILE! Project (website: www.givesmiles.usyoutube channel: givesmiles.us).  It discusses seven common reasons why dogs do what they do, to help people see more things through their dogs' eyes.

    The seven reasons are:
       (1) The dog has been rewarded for doing it in the past.
       (2) A negative association exists.
       (3) He's never been shown better alternate behaviors.
       (4) He's following a routine.
       (5) He's looking for an outlet for his pent-up energy.
       (6) His behavior is instinctual (after all, he is a dog!).
       (7) He's being set up for failure without his people realizing it.

Here are some really good videos we use during volunteer training (staff goes through the volunteer training as well) that help with dog body language, training, and how to interact safely while working with the dogs.

Our rescue, Aiding 2 Adoption, just recently started working with GoodPup and we are very excited.  GoodPup provides a free week of training and support to new adopters.  I think this is such a great resource to help adopters give their new family furmember the best start possible.  As a rescue, we can also purchase or receive through donations training time to give to fosters to help with training issues with foster dogs.

I'm Lexi Kaul and I work for Pet Helpers Adoption Center and Spay/Neuter Clinic in Charleston, SC. I have designed a Behavior Matrix/Protocol for both dogs and cats, while consulting with other rescues, trainers, and handlers . Each 'challenge' is listed with a definition of the term, three stages of progression, as well as interventions for each step. The matrix moves similar to a timeline of when the behaviors first present until they become severe. As we know, the early the intervention is the better! If there are any questions, feel free to reach out to me!

We are a small rescue in Idaho and don't have many options for trainers that are willing to work with behaviors in dogs that come into rescue and the few that do, are too expensive.  We recently joined with GoodPup an at-home,  video chat training service.  We are really excited about this partnership and hope it will be the answer to our training dilema for both the rescue and our adopters.  Has anyone used this service?  Would be very interested in hearing about success stories.

We use GoodPup and love it! We have used it with staff (in helping them deal with more difficult dogs here at the shelter) as well as with our fosters and adopters. It's been a great resource to have.

    Hi all:

Here is the link to the "K9 Behavior SKILL-building: Communicating With Canines" presentation from last year's Texas Unites for Animals Conference. At 1 hour 20 minutes, it's an excellent K9 behavior training seminar for staff, volunteers, foster homes and new adopters, alike.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=adBodyKVgKg

For those of you who have been asking for help with reactive dogs, I'm presently working on the sound edits for another seminar "K9 Behavior SKILL-building: How to Turn Reactive! into Relaxed." I'll let y'all know when it has been uploaded to YouTube.

This is the human-side-of-the-leash training video that comes after the above video "WHY does my dog DO that?" on the givesmiles.us K9 behavior YouTube channel. It's called "12 Common Mistakes People Make with Their Dogs (and How Easy it is to Avoid Them)."

The 12 common mistakes discussed are:

       (1)  Expecting the best from under-exercised dogs.

       (2)  Expecting dogs to calmly sit, down or stay when they are all wound up. (Picture someone screaming Sit! Down! or Stay! to a hopping hound or dashing Doberman. It's much better to drop the dog's energy level through a little directed movement, then ask them to sit, down or stay when they are calmer and more focused.)

       (3)  Expecting dogs to readily respond to you when their focus isn't on you.

       (4)  Introducing dogs face-to-face on tight leashes.

       (5)  Reaching toward or over dogs you don't know. (There are much better and safer ways to say hello!)

       (6)  Kenneling dogs face-to-face with their triggers (other dogs, most commonly).

       (7)  Not addressing human excitement (calmly), so it doesn't fuel unwanted behaviors in dogs.

       (8)  Breaking the 2 Golden Rules. (First rule: Reward what you want. Second rule: Stop rewarding what you DON'T want!)

       (9)  Not rewarding calmness and relaxation as good behavioral choices.

       (10)  Not leading the way at times when decision-making is important, so dogs step up to make poor decisions on their own.

       (11)  Not recognizing the effect of horror-mones on a dog's behavior.

       (12)  Over-fueling dogs by over-feeding.

Just a little good food for thought...
