Are you a part of an animal welfare organization in the United States? Does your shelter or rescue take dogs and/or cats? Does your shelter or rescue accept animals from owner relinquishment? Do you track why owners state they cannot keep their pet?
If so, we would love to hear from you! We invite you to please take two surveys as part of a research project investigating current reasons for owner relinquishment of dogs and cats to shelters in the United States. Each survey is estimated to take approximately 30 minutes. In them you will answer questions regarding the current reasons for relinquishment in to your organization for the calendar years of 2019 and 2020 (separate surveys for each year.) Additionally, in the 2020 survey we will ask some questions about how the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted your intake operations. Completing this survey is completely voluntary and you can stop at any time by simply closing your internet browser. Participating in this research is not an expectation nor requirement of your job.
In order to participate, you must be at least 18 years of age, reside in the United States, and have access to your sheltering organization's intake and owner relinquishment data. In order for your organization to be eligible to participate, it must take in dogs and/or cats, and take in at least some of the intake population from owner relinquishments.
If your organization takes owner relinquishments but does not track reasons relinquishing owners give as to why they are surrendering, please do not participate in this study. If you do not have permission to access your organization's relinquishment data, please do not participate in this study.
The risks of participating in this survey are minimal and there are no direct benefits. However, a major indirect benefit includes you will help us determine what today's relinquishment statistics are- for your area and the country, and how they've changed over the past few years. This information can then be used to help inform what areas of community support can be targeted to help reduce relinquishment nationally, regionally and for specific organizations, and help forge the future of animal welfare programs.
