Hey All. If you're rescuing, fostering, or otherwise working around scared or 'difficult' dogs, you may be interested in this:
If you have a dog who seems scared of everything, or scared of just certain things, who prefers to avoid rather than acclimate, or who growls or acts aggressively when avoidance isn't possible, it's not that there's something wrong with your dog's nature.

Your dog may simply be acting on natural survival instincts.

Or maybe your dog isn't scared, but simply doesn't listen to you, ignores cues even though you've already taught them, or just doesn't seem to learn very easily-this doesn't mean there's something wrong with your dog's nature either.

Your dog may just be confused.

If you have to resort to crowdsourcing for help, there's a good chance you'll end up confused as well. That's because too many opinions can delay rather than highlight a proper solution.

As a result of the barrage of opinions, what many pet owners do in response to behavior issues is use corrections or force, trying to get the dog to behave in more desirable ways.
They may even have trusted dangerous advice to hurt or threaten their dog and now regret it, seeing that things have only gotten worse since then.

Even with your best of intentions, those approaches will tend to exacerbate the behavior problems the dog already has, and may add new problems as well.

If you live with, foster, or work around scared or difficult dogs, you'll be happy to know that simple shifts in your approach can bring notable improvement in your dog's behavior.
