Audience Growth

    Hi everyone!

We are a new foster-based cat rescue in Connecticut, focused on rehoming stray cats and conducting TNR for ferals. I'm looking for suggestions on how to grow our audience and reach more potential adopters.

We're currently active on TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, and Petfinder, and we use local hashtags. On TikTok, our posts get around 1,000 views each. We have three cats posted for adoption, but after two weeks, we haven't had any interest. I know it takes time, but I'd love any advice on spreading the word further!

So far, our vet has shared our Facebook and Instagram posts, and we've joined and posted in many local Facebook groups. If anyone has additional suggestions or strategies that have worked for you, I'd really appreciate the insight!

    Thank you!

Congratulations! We are a fairly new (2 year old) foster based TNR organization that focuses on socializing kittens and community cats.

We have had our best success with pet finder and Adopt a Pet. Even though we have a retail space that we showcase kitties once a week, those avenues have been better for us. Our average length of stay last year for adoptable cats was 70 days. (21-30 of that is usually isolation, surgery recovery and socialization.)

Hope others have some great ideas as well could benefit from this too, and best of luck!

Thank you! We are not a part of Adopt a Pet, so I will look into that!

Hi! We have been actively trying to grow our social media following as well - we have a goal of growing by 100 followers per month. Sometimes it feels a little just like the luck, I have found that usually "Sadder" posts unfortunately do seem to do better for whatever reason (we try to keep things light on our page but an occasional sad post seems to help in gaining traction).

I also make sure to post EVERY day. It is exhausting quite honestly, but keeping up the steady flow of content is very important, even if it is just a low stakes "how are you doing today, heres cat Mimi to say hello". To keep folks engaged.

Also, I know this might not be in the budget but from time to time, I will pay to boost a post to gain interactions on Instagram... It does help in getting the followers to arrive.

It is exhausting! Through my research, besides posting daily, you also have to be very engaged in commenting on other posts. Who has the time?! I may look into getting a volunteer I trust to help with social media because I feel like it has such a big impact on adoptions... I've thought about boosting but fear it may send people away as they may think donations are going towards advertising, although I would use my own funds.

    Thanks for your help!

    Good morning, Carley,
Community Cat Angels is a foster-based org in Las Vegas Nevada.  We also post on all the social media you mentioned.  We recently started posting on Blue Sky, which is similar to FB but is typically a younger demographic.  We have formed a relationship with Petsmart and many of our friendly rescue kitties go into adoptions with them.  There is a whole process to be accepted into their program.  Additionally, we have a cat cafe adoption center here we work with and they also accept friendliest into their adoption facility.  Hope this gives you a couple of ideas.  Thank you for what your org is doing to address the over population.

    Regards, Kat

Thank you for the suggestions! I'd love to look into Blue Sky, do you get a good amount of views on there?

My ultimate goal is opening a cat cafe in our area but we still have time to get there!

We have a cat cafe here in Reno,  Kitty Kisses. The owner is lovely and a successful business woman. The cafe pays for all of their rescue work . The owner may be too busy to reply to any inquiries, but you may gleam some helpful info from their website. They get their kitties from our local county animal control and specialize in socializing feral kittens preparing them for adoption.  I met with the owner a few months ago . Clearly a successful business and rescue model to follow.

    Good Luck!

    Hi Carly,

Congratulations on your new rescue. We are a bit different in that we are a farm and exotic animal sanctaury/rescue. We have rabbits, pigs, guinea pigs, and tortoises available for adoption from time to time. You are correct in thinking social media is a big way to get the animals out there and it is exhausting! Do your foster homes send you pictures and/or videos to share? If not get your foster parents more involved. The one thing that has helped our reach is getting friends, family and volunteers to share our posts. Most don't think to do it on their own, but will share silly memes all day long. I ask and remind them constantly. I have noticed lately that our videos and reels get more attention as does sad posts. We prefer to keep our posts as positive as possible even though we know the sad posts get more attention. We list our pets on petfinder and adopt a pet. We have found that we get more inquiries through adopt a pet. Another suggestion, if you have time or volunteers to help, would be to reach out to local pet stores and see if they would be willing to do an adoption event for you or at the very least hang flyers with your rescues information.

Thank you! My foster's do keep me well up to date with content, it's just a lot to post on top of managing the rescue and a full-time job LOL. I appreciate all of your advice, it is very helpful. I applied to be a member of Adopt a Pet today. Looks like they have many more features than pet finder.
