    Posted 10-20-2023 10:43 AM

    Hello everyone,

My team is working on finding a book that we can connect back to a lesson on Dog Care & Safety. The program is for pre-k - 1st graders. Does anyone have any book recommendations?

    Thank you!

I like this one. It's very readable and relatable for young children, and the illustrations are well done.

While I don't have a book recommendation I just wanted to comment that I'm so happy you're looking for that kind of resource and that there is one available!  I keep thinking that all it would take is one generation - starting with teaching kids in kindergarten about pet ownership - to completely change the outcome for our world's furry friends (and probably animals of all kinds!).  Having an impact on the education part very much remains on my "when I win the lottery" list.  In the meantime, thank you for what you're doing to help!! 🥰

    My best,

    SL

In the dog safety lesson plans for 1st-2nd graders that @ERIN ELLIS from the Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe shared on the August 2023 Humane Education Resource Drive post, they used two books:   "May I Pet Your Dog" (shared above by @Carol Brendler) and "Don't Lick the Dog".

If you haven't already, be sure to check out the RedRovers Readers program. They include workshops, lesson plans, an empathy app, and more resources.  They also have a list of recommended books with humane themes on their website.

Another good one is Buddy Unchained. I talk with the kids about what Buddy didn't have that he needed (in his first home) and once he was adopted, what he did have.

I work for the Humane Rescue Alliance. Debbie Duel, our DC-based Director of Humane Education, gave the following recommendations. Some have already shown up in this thread:

May I Pet Your Dog?: The How-to Guide for Kids Meeting Dogs (and Dogs Meeting Kids) Hardcover – Illustrated, April 16, 2007

Don't Lick the Dog: Making Friends with Dogs Paperback – March 26, 2022

Tails Are Not for Pulling (Board Book) (Best Behavior Series) Board book – September 15, 2005

Hot Dog: (Winner of the 2023 Caldecott Medal) by Doug Salati  | May 24, 2022  *** Not a traditional safety around dogs book, but a lot of fun to read and talk about out loud. If I had a kindergarten or 1st grade class, I'd definitely try to build a safety lesson (for dogs and people) around this book.
