Camp Maddie: Foster Edition was recorded on December 7, 2023.

    Watch the recordings here!

Camp Maddie is a new learning series beginning with a virtual half-day foster care edition.

We'll cover a variety of topics and share successful strategies through short 20-minute presentations, panel discussions, video snippets and Q&A sessions. The focus will be on recruiting foster caregivers for adult dogs (but everyone is welcome!).

Presenters from across the country who specialize in foster care will discuss breaking down barriers in the foster field, how they recruit foster caregivers, and provide insight into strategies they use to make fostering accessible in their communities.

Who should attend? Everyone is welcome. Camp Maddie is perfect for those interested or involved in existing foster care programs, foster coordinators, marketing, leadership and operations enthusiasts.

Participants will be eligible for up to 4 Certified Animal Welfare Administrator (CAWA) and National Animal Care & Control Association (NACA) continued education credit hours.

    Topics and featured programs include
    • Low-Barrier Onboarding for High Community Engagement  with @Luis Quintanilla, @Clare Callison and @Becky Costner
    • Dog Foster Recruitment Strategies that are Working Right Now  with @Whitney Fang, @Meaghan Colville and Jennifer Taylor
    • Maximizing Placements through Collaboration at Operation Kindness with @Shonyae Johnson and @Abigail (Abby) Principe
    • Expanding Foster Programs with Foster+ at Dallas Pets Alive! with @Jenay Bennett (she/her)

Hi, you mentioned in the session that you have new fosters sign up, watch a video, then can take an animal same day.  How do you know they watch the videos? Do they watch them there at the shelter? What if people apply to be a foster online? How can you be sure they watched the video with all of the rules?

    Hey Erin!

Walk-in fosters or Foster First fosters (those wanting to participate in our 7-day trial adoption program) watch the video at the shelter while they wait for our team - which seems like a great way to occupy their time while they wait (5-10 minutes) for us to process their application and foster the animal through our system. Our adoption team provides a QR code for them to watch on their phone or we have a tablet they can utilize. They also get the link to our long-form orientation video to watch from home, if they desire in their welcome email.

Here is our video for the info we provide to our walk-in/foster first fosters and is our shorter orientation video: https://www.canva.com/design/DAFbz3HEShs/xmYCuFw7ABysGaXLf9ohHQ/watch

For those signing online and in person, after the video is watched they get a qualification that shows on their better impact account.

When you are sending dogs to foster that have different plans, what do those plans look like? is there a template for each type of plan? Being no kill we have a longer length of stay and our most critical long terms are our behavioral dogs.

I would be interested in this too.  We are also a no-kill shelter.  We have one kennel supervisor that does behavioral work with the dogs and I am the only person on our foster team.  We have, in the past, only sent out puppies and kittens to foster.  This summer we started a weekend program for adult dogs.  We are now considering sending out adult dogs and adult cats for long term foster stays.  They do not want to send dogs with behavioral issues out to foster, so I would be curious to learn how other shelters do this.

Hi McKenzie! Our shelter uses protocols that we send out for behaviors like reactivity, jumpy/mouthy, shy/fearful, and resource guarding behaviors. These protocols include a short summary of the behavior plus links to resources and videos. These are shared with the foster at pick up and include 2-3 action items for the foster to work on so they're not overwhelmed. Counseling is a big part of it too!

Please email me if you or anyone else is interested in seeing what they look like and I can share them! swolfman@awla.org

For those interested I have a couple of examples of the protocols that we send out with fosters attached here! I have attached the reactivity and the jumpy/mouthy protocols -- these are the most prevalent issues that we've been seeing and I'm sure it's the same with others. These are great because they have links to other resources and some in-house resources as well. We try to use laymen's terms to describe behavior and talk about behavior so that it's relatable and translatable to other staff talking about behavior as well. Hoping these help some folks continue to place dogs!

Hi all, I have a link to the recorded presentation that I have for the Foster BYOB below. For some reason I can't change the title of the video in the program that I use, but it is for Foster Events not Adoption Events :)
