February of 2022. And you are so right, the first couple years have been hard and finding resources like this are definitely a Godsend. The first thing I realized is you are basically on an island with tons of things working against you to make a success of it. Networking with people who know what it's like and are willing to share has its own challenges, but there are people out there who are willing to help. Being that you are so close, we should get together and compare notes. :)

Hi Susan,
When did you start your nonprofit? I started mine in 2021 and the first few years were hard. Self-supporting is a must. I have lots of ideas with the kinds of programs I want but have no idea how to get them started. I would have to say my nonprofit is like Heinz-57, a little bit of everything. I find that while it seems like it is a lot of work, having options, and being diversified allow me to find organically the way(s) to grow and serve the community. I must confess, I could not have done without being part of Maddie's Fund - the ideas, the support, the lessons, they are all amazing. The opportunities are endless, I just need to take them all in and I did. Beyond ideas, Maddie's Fund is wonderful for networking. I would be at a loss without it. We should chat sometimes even meet up since it looks like we are both in Northern California. Regarding Taproot, I went to the website, took your suggestions and realize what I had in mind, Taproot may not be able to help but there are other areas I can use the help and Marketing and Communications section is an excellent suggestion. So Thank you!

My pleasure!!! Feel free to reach me at susana@starsandstripesdogrescue.org. One of my goals for 2025 was to find more time to network. I want to share the many adventures I have encountered while building this non-profit. :)

What a great suggestion, I will try that. Marketing/Communications is a good start. Thank you again. Julie

What I did initially was to click on Browse Opportunities (at the very top (left side of the screen) and viewed all the different requests that had been submitted similar to mine. I was able to get a better sense of what things to include in my initial request. Because you are looking for virtual volunteers and nothing for a specific project, I would attach the job description/duties of what you need these virtual volunteers to do for the organization.
I did a quick check of the areas of support, and I see your dilemma. Maybe use Marketing/Communications and see if you can get a volunteer to help you design a program to find Virtual Volunteers??? Having a description will not only help you put some solid framework about your needs but will provide the details the volunteer needs to design a comprehensive program.
Reviewing the open opportunities may help give you some ideas.

Hi Susan,
I just joined Taproot but not sure what kind of volunteers request is appropriate. Since you had some positive experience, do you mind share what types of volunteers would be good to request. I am not associated with a rescue or shelter, my nonprofit is to support rescues and shelters. So virtual volunteer support is what I am looking for. BTW, I think we connected before although I forgot what it was about. LOL!

We have used Taproot a few times and have been very pleased with the volunteers who worked our projects. The key is to be very specific about what you are looking for and have a general idea for timelines and deliverables. This helps the volunteer determine if they have the skills and time to be able to dedicate themselves to the project.

Hi Julielani! Another opportunity I found recently that might be a good fit for you is Causality. They have four deadlines a year. You might also want to look into Taproot - they aren't a funder, but they connect highly-skilled volunteers with nonprofits.
Hope your project is going well!

Hi Jory,
Thank you for the suggestions. I think a Technology Grant would be the way to go. We did look at Petco Love Lost and got some good information. I am looking forward to the AWS IMAGINE Grant program to see if there is anything there for us. Thank you again.

Oh, very interesting! I might check out this Amazon grant opportunity: AWS IMAGINE Grant Program - Nonprofit Cloud Solutions - AWS
In this case in general, I think you'll likely have better luck looking for technology grants that aren't necessarily focused on animal welfare at all. Here are a couple resources that I found by Googling "app development grants for nonprofits:"
I'd also recommend looking into Petco Love Lost - Petco is trying to make Love Lost the gold standard for reuniting lost pets. There may be opportunities for collaboration there, but at minimum I'm sure that it would be helpful to see what they're doing!

Hi Jory, I am looking for a technology-related grant that might help solve animal welfare problems. I am working with a group of computer science college students interested in developing an app to help find lost dogs. While there are a few mobile apps like PawBoost, Petnow, and Missing Pets, the students are pursuing a slightly different approach to the problem. We joined the Apple Developer program to use their software and as a nonprofit, I was able to defer the membership fee for now but just wondering if there is anything for this type of indirect and outside-of-the-box approach where there is no direct and hands-on engagement with the animals.

@Julielani Chang - can you say more about what you mean by 'innovation' grants?
