Updated 6/5/23 at 3:42pm - Recording now available to watch on-demand!

    ORIGINAL POST:
We hope to see you on
Monday, June 5, 2023 at 11am PT for our next Community Conversations call.

We will be joined by @José Ocaño (he/him/el) for a presentation on, "Intentional Leadership: Leading with Radical Acceptance, Curiosity, and Compassion to Engage and Retain Employees." Maddie's Fund will also be announcing the grant winners for the May Community Conversations giveaway!

"Who you are is how you lead" is not a new concept. There have been TED Talks, books, podcasts, and countless articles talking about how leadership first starts with each of us, and here's one more, tailored for the human-animal-wellbeing space! In this week's conversation, we are joined by José Ocaño, Founder and CEO of Hatching, a consulting firm focused on personal, leadership and workplace culture development. Come get curious and learn about how these three things are connected and create an ecosystem for attracting and retaining talent.

Register here for our Monday Community Conversations Calls: maddies.fund/CommunityConversationsRegistration

If you are unable to make it live on Monday, this thread will be updated with the recording and resources so you can watch and share whenever you'd like.  After you watch the recording or attend the call live, be sure to complete this new June entry form to enter to win a grant: https://www.maddiesfund.org/weekly-community-conversations-jun23-giveaway.htm

Hi @José Ocaño (he/him/el) ~ thanks so much for  your presentation today!

I just now saw this message, and I wondered if you have any examples for how we can use these principles in all-volunteer organizations?  Thanks!

Hi @April King , yes, I think this applies. Since all organizations are made up of people and systems, regardless of being paid staff or volunteers, I think this framework can be beneficial. Do you have a specific scenario I can better weigh in on?

April, what a good question.  I was able to listen to the recording and it really resonated with me.

April- to keep the conversation going about your question of how to implement these principles with an all-volunteer organization. What we try to do at our non-profit which is  split between volunteer(co-founders and others) and few paid (co-founders) is:

    1. Resetting with our Founders Meetings and remembering our mission and goals.
    2. Making sure that we are appreciative of everyone's time an resources given to make the nonprofit successful (Which we are not always GREAT at, but we work at it).

Jose- this session really made me think back to my college days when I learned about servant leadership and really being an active listener. Showing Empathy and being intentional. It also made me think about the Golden Rule, do until others, what you would want done to you.  These 2 principles are what guide me.  Your phrase, "Compassion is wanting to Know", also hit home because we really do need to STOP and Listen to others.

Thanks so much for the thought-provoking session.

Thank you so much, Leah, for your input. I greatly appreciate your suggestions for April. My overall advice is to treat your volunteers with the same consideration as you would your staff. When volunteers are relied upon heavily, they also desire a seat at the table and would benefit from consistent and clear communication, training, and development opportunities. To effectively work with and manage volunteers, it is important to put in the necessary groundwork, which will enable you to better engage volunteers and provide them with a compelling reason to continue supporting you and your organization.

It was a good presentation.  To me, one of the most impactful comments was toward the end when Jose said he decided a long time ago that he cannot solve the community's pet problems.  That really resonated with me as it removed a guilt burden that I think many of us carry.  The daily requests for help or complaints continue to escalate and it seems people no longer want to hear suggestions about how they can help themselves or the situation.  They simply want our group to make it go away.  They simply want us to say we'll take their pet off their hands.  We can't.  Plain and simple - we cannot solve all their problems, but we are doing as much as we can to make a difference.  We shouldn't have to carry the burden of knowing the problem is much larger than what our group can resolve. So many of us are nearly burnt out.  I told our director I need a course on how to tell people no that is more palatable to the person asking and in a way that won't reflect poorly on our organization.  As it is, when they are told sorry, we cannot……they get angry and try to make us feel guilty.  That burden of guilt should not be ours to bear.

Hey Cindy, thanks for sharing your thoughts. In my opinion, compassion is super important. But I forgot to mention a key factor which is the importance of combining compassion with healthy boundaries. This is what helps me take care of myself and positions me to make a real impact in our industry.

I want to keep stressing this point: when people suffer, animals suffer too. And right now, people are dealing with some serious systemic issues like racism and classism. These issues are complex and won't be fixed overnight, maybe not even in my lifetime. But I won't let that discourage me. I'll keep doing what I can with the time, energy, and resources I have. I've got to remind myself that what I achieved each day is enough and that I've got a lot to be proud of. It's important to take a break, recharge, and do things other than focusing sole on saving animals all the time.

What I've come to know is that by taking care of myself, I'm actually able to help way more animals in the long run. So I'm ditching the guilt of feeling like I'm never doing enough. It's not because I care any less, but because I know guilt doesn't do me any good. It just leads to burnout, scarcity, and keeps the unhealthy cycle going.

Sending love to everyone on this journey. I know it's easier said than done, but we all deserve peace. And the only way we can make a sustainable difference for people and animals is by being self-aware and prioritizing practices that make us more compassionate human beings.

    Jose

I agree with you 100%! Our organization struggles with this a lot too! It seems each year, individuals who was to surrender pets or people who don't agree with our processes or policies get angrier and more rude and our staff and leaders really take the brunt of that . It's hard not to take it personally when it feels like we are trying the best we can with a very small organization.

I watched the webinar rather than attending in person.  And, as it turns out, I'm glad.  I stopped and backed up several times to allow for note taking.  I have had a long managerial career outside of this field.  Consequently, I have had many opportunities to participate in various leadership training forums.  This was one of the most valuable leadership presentations that I have had the pleasure of attending!  Several points resonated with me,  some affirming, some causes for reflection.   I look forward to creating space to think, feel and plan and see where it takes me.  Jose, thank you for your wisdom, your compassion and your intentional/authentic delivery.  I wish the session could have been longer.  Thank you Maddie's for making this available.

Hi everyone! If you liked my Community Conversation, you are going to LOVE my free online offering starting next week!

Starting Wednesday September 6th at 3pm PST, we are kicking-off Hatching Hour, an online gathering focused on providing inspiring insights and practical advice to help you, your team, and even your family #livebetter and #workbetter.
At Hatching Hour, we'll gather virtually twice a month and dive into topics that will level-up our personal and professional growth.
I'm thrilled to announce that the internationally celebrated Dr. Jyothi Vinnakota Robertson will be our first guest speaker. Our inaugural topic will focus on compassion-more specifically, how to cultivate greater self-compassion.

I'm still pinching myself that the little boy from Barrio Anita is starting a company focused on helping us all live with more intention and peace.
Please invite your colleagues, friends, and family to this free online gathering-a more intentional life is waiting for you on the other side!
    With humility,
    Jose O
