Favorite grant database?

  • 1.  Favorite grant database?

    Posted 05-01-2025 06:49 AM

There are several paid grant databases that my organization is considering looking into... I am wonder if anyone has a favorite one for searching for animal welfare grants, and is the memership worth it to you? Or is there a free database we may not be aware of? We have searched for foundation grants on Candid. Thanks in advance!

Our organization has tried out a few but I love GrantWatch! Personally, I find it to be the most intuitive to use and I don't think the price is crazy either ($199 for the year). We have thought about signing up to GrantStation as they have a deal right now that instead of $699 yearly, it's $139. If you're leaning towards GrantStation I would act pretty fast.

    I hope this helps!

I have been going down this road myself!  Candid has been a wonderful source for helping me learn what to put in a proposal and how to frame the budget (that isn't exactly covered in free accounting classes! ;) )

    Here is what I've found:

Hello Skip has a micro grant opportunity twice a week on a free account and announcements to other opportunities every week.
Zeffy is awesome for donations and has a free grant finder.
The Share Way free account allows you to look at 5 grants a month.
    And, of course, there's Maddie's Fund! ;)

The following is a list of one's that I am considering with low, monthly payment options:
Grant Gopher (has a free lite account similar to The Share Way)
    Grant Seeker
    Open Grants

    The Grant Portal

    Good luck on your search!

A great way to get FREE access to Candid's Foundation Grant Database is to gain a Gold  medallion  status for your 501c(3). It does not take much effort but does require a copy of your tax return. Candid's Go for the Gold program then lets you submit for use of their basic database of grants. Here's a link to the Candid's article explaining the whole thing. The use if for 1-year but it's renewable. Give it a look see!

Hi Buck: I didn't see the link to the Candis's article re: their Go for the Gold Program. Can you provide? Karen S. Peterson, President, Garfield's Rescue, Inc.  Thank you!

    Hi Buck,

We just started using Candid's database but we only paid a month in case it wasn't for us. It seems great though! So much useful information! Can you share that link? We'd love to get this service for free.

I've used Candid for years.  I find looking through the 990s very helpful when trying to figure out if our organization is a good fit and how much to ask for.  We've been able to find grants for programs that aren't animal related from funders who would never support animal welfare but support other services that our organization provides that involve the animals in our care.  It's made a huge difference in our fundraising.

Mandarin's Retreat has used Candid almost as soon as we started in 2023. Completing your profile does two things. First, you become more visible to donors searching Candid's database and second, the profile provides the basic boilerplate for many grant requests. In fact, several of the grants we applied for pull data from Candid straight into the grant request form.

By filling out your profile completely, can easily reach the Gold medallion status which give you access to the basic level of Candid's Foundation database of donors. While it doesn't have all be bells and whistles of the paid version, it does help on our operational budget. Our little rescue/hospice has easily reach the Platinum level for 2024 and 2025. Very well worth the effort to input the information.

    Hope this helps!

Thank you for this!  Your question actually helped us, but in a completely different way!  We are a newly established rescue and just recently achieved our 501c3 status, so we are just now starting to explore what's out there in the grant world.  And most we are finding are membership required, so we were hesitant to know what's a good vs not so good resourced one.  So regardless of a favorite as asked in your question, we were able to view the comments to get some resources and knowledge our selves.  So thank you!

Yay! I am glad that I asked something that can be helpful to others!

And also thank you so much to everyone who replied! For some reason, I didn't get the alerts that my post had been replied to -- @Diana Kelley - I hadn't heard of some of the ones you suggested, so I really appreciate it. Looking at all of these now!

    Hi Sarah,

I created and shared a grant resource list to the library - you're likely already aware of these but I wanted to share it just in case.  Here's the link if you're interested!
