Flea + Tick Partnership Opportunity

Sploot Marketing is a Strategic Alliance Marketing agency for pet welfare organizations and we have a new partnership opportunity available with PetFriendly!

PetFriendly believes every pet deserves the best care and that all pet parents and caretakers should have access to an affordable, easy and enjoyable flea+tick wellness routine, so they are prioritizing taking action within the sheltering space.  They want to ensure adoptable dogs and cats have access to quality preventative care while relieving the financial burden of the shelter/rescue org to cover this monthly expense.

As part of this partnership, they will provide their vet-formulated flea+tick treatments (yes, for free) to keep shelter pets safe from harmful pests such as ticks, mosquitoes, lice, and biting fleas while awaiting their adoption day!

They will also help encourage adopters to continue a preventative care routine at home by providing a free first treatment and offering a fun and feasible monthly delivery service that will keep pet parents engaged.

At this time, we are looking for facilitate this partnership relationship with 3-5 larger scale organizations (150+ monthly adoptions) to get this initiative jump started and then will be looking to extend the invitation openly to other organizations within the next 3 months.

You can read more details here:  splootmarketing.com/petfriendly

*Please do not complete the partnership agreement form if you are interested - but instead contact me at dana@splootmarketing.com

Thank you so much for all you do for pets in need!

Hi Dana, thanks for the info. When you say you will extend to other organizations within the next 3 months, will you be staying with larger organizations or will you be considering smaller orgs (~80-100 adoptions per month)?

    This is wonderful.
I want to work on getting the preventatives out to pet owners who otherwise can't afford it.  It is SO expensive to a person on a limited income.  I don't know what my final idea will look like, but here is one:  When surrender is attempted for a behavior problem, offer a training program with preventatives as an incentive for doing the training work.

Diatomaceous earth is VERY affordable and also NON toxic s doesn't  cause seizures or neurological issues. Many honest veterinarians will advise to use it and even put out free videos .

    Hi Angie,

I've heard of using DE to treat carpets but you use it as a preventative? Any information on dosages and how often you use it?

    also NON toxic
    Rich Vedas,  07-17-2023 06:28 AM

It is not toxic if ingested but can cause damage to lungs if inhaled.  I have seen people scattering it like birdseed and who knows what human or animal had breathing problems because of it.

I don't recommend, neither do holistic vets  "scattering it like birdseed" YouTube vets and natural dog magazines have a lot  of info as well.

I worry what the diatoms might do if ingested. They kill pests by piercing their bodies , iirc, so could it hurt good bacteria in the gut?

They don't hurt bacteria, that I've ever heard or read of, and many humans use them for parasites as well.  You can always keep it to external use till  you gather more info / are more comfortable. Natural Farmers have used diatom forever for their livestock health (in their food) as it helps with their cost / hair and to stay parasite free. Hope this helps !

Hi,  Yes If  you're using it topically, I believe  it's as needed. Don't lay it on too thick as it can dry out their skin. A dusting. Also keep out of your own eyes. If using ok the yard / doggie beds etc  it will  stay effective as long as it's not wet. If using internally  for parasites, many follow a twice yearly regimen ( in  food 4 two weeks twice a year) must be Food Grade. Humans  also use it internally for parasites. There are several vets and natural dog magazines discussing this online, YouTube etc. I've seen the damage toxic poisonous ones can do and prefer to steer clear of them at all costs. Plus, diatom is super affordable ! A 15 lb bag will last years and is under $20. I believe  we need to expand away from the toxic industry that is poisoning our pets and the vets that insist on it to the benefit  of their pocketbook. I learned about this when had a rescue shepherd that came with every parasite imaginable and nothing toxic (poisoning her blood) I got from the vet helped till I found the info on diatom online. Adding some to her food she was much better within a week. It's also amazing for their skin and coats. Natural farmers will add this to their animals food for this reason alone.

DE is a skin and lung irritant. I do not suggest using this in the home or in large amounts around your animals

That depends on which Google you consult. We know they promote certain things  and bash other.  It's definitely NOT meant  to be used in "LARGE AMOUNT" but very very small amounts, as fine as possible. . Again, there are many places like Dogs Naturally Magazine and many holistic vets on YouTube promoting its use rather than selling you expensive  toxic products that literally poison your dogs blood monthly causing organ failure, seizures and  worse. But, again, you're welcome to use (and spend and support) who you want. Farmers have used diatom for ages for the health of their livestock internally in food as antiparasitical. It's funny how people would get up in arms about this alternative to straight poison BUT happily eat glyphosate which is sprayed   so much it gives the farmers cancer. To each their own I guess

I understand that current flea/tick medications can be problematic, but it appears  that diatomaceous earth is not an ideal alternative. It sounds to me that the risks, and the fact that it isn't as effective, don't outweigh the advantages when the health and well being of the animals in my care are concerned.  You do you, but I will wait for a better alternative, until and unless I hear differently from one of our vets.  No need to respond, since you seem to be feeling that we are picking apart your recommendation. I applaud you for seeking out safer products. Again, you do what feel is best. We are all trying to do what we feel is best for the animals.

Yes Many vets will also tell their clients to bring in dogs for yearly rabies vx, while it's only required every 3 years, and it's the EXACT same shot just labeled differently. As stated in my original comment many Honest vets recommend diatom * and it's Very effective end safe as humans have been taking it and using it for a long time. I would never reckoned anything that wasn't safe. It's called follow the Money. But yeas you do your dogs and no need to respond! I will continue  to share effective and natural remedies.

I totally agree with you Angie on the one-year rabies thing.  Some of the one-year rabies thing is driven by local laws changing very slowly -- some towns sill require it!   AAHA's blue-ribbon panel of vax experts completed the challenge study showing that after the first two doses a year apart, subsequent protection lasted beyond 3 years, but local authorities were super-slow to allow 3-year vaxing in some places (meaning to you were legally required to vaccinate yearly, even though that wasn't scientifically supported).  It's been long enough that most jurisdictions have caught up.  The current fight a lot of places is over titering -- there are still some localities that don't recognize titers as an alternative to vax boosters.  That's a problem with autoimmune dogs IMHO.

AAHA is currently working on a 5-year challenge study for rabies, so we may see the 3-year rec pushed back to 5 years eventually.   Where it's legal, any clinic that's AAHA-accredited will follow AAHA vax guidelines (3-year rabies, 3-year DAPP).    Some corporate chains (e.g., Banfield) may push for annual re-vax only to get you in annually --clients should feel empowered to show them a print-out of the AAHA guidelines and ask them to please practice evidence-based medicine,  as these guidelines represent a well-researched, scientific consensus from top veterinary experts.

Yes, . Most Vets I hear about still push it annually and most dog parents I speak  with have no idea iof the 3 year shot. Not sure how many towns still require it annual- they may require an annual Registration/ Tag But that is separate from having a Valid rabies cert. I know, every town can make its own rules. I've looked into some that even require non core Vx annually to live there ! But that is not the norm from what I've seen.
As for the Vets, 30% of their income comes from annual re-vx. As the old saying goes," it's hard to get a man to understand something when his salary depends on not" I'm paraphrasing here/ that's why I mentioned honest veterinarians, there are many around and those are the ones that put out free videos explaining the safety and benefits of DE. Actually it's about the only natural substance that can get rid your beds of bed bugs. And none have been harmed by it unless they are just totally unaware. You can drink too much water and DIE. Everything needs to be used wisely. Again, I provided a link for VERY cheap generic "meds" and everyone I've shared the link with, personally I know, have thanked me Profusely for helping them save a Ton of money. I won't support those overpriced businesses where generic alternatives exist for like $5/pill. I've seen so many dogs damages neurological/ organ damage that I personally will do anything I can do avoid those months "meds" that are making someone very rich .. that was my intention in sharing the knowledge. I don't see anyone attacking the holistic vets online when they put out free videos to help us. I've found Tons of positive articles and magazines regarding diatom. Online. Very little negativity. I posted this for folks to investigate further . Hope it helps -

I've also seen many positive reviews of putting nematodes in your yard to rid the areas of ticks, If you like in that environment and need help during  the summer months they will clear the areas of ticks completely. I've read so many positive testimonials from dog owners.

Oh and I also posted a link to a Very affordable Generic place to get all your "meds" for those who chose to go that route (poisoning your dogs monthly is hardly safe and effective in my opinion) as many sites state it is the main cause of seizures but it seems to me you have no interest in Anything I have to offer)  you're welcome to do the to pay those prices  and risk your pets health . I've done my part  to share what I know, how people respond is not within my control. Best-

This sounds like a wonderful symbiotic relationship and a way for the new flea/tick company to gain market share, but this monthly delivery requirement could lead to some hard feelings. If Sploot is one of those high-pressure, hard-to-cancel, calling the customer every other week to up-sell or ask for reviews type of service then I, personally, don't love it. In effect, it sounds to me like the animal welfare groups become the company's salespeople in exchange for free product. I'm not saying it's bad or that it can't work, just know what you are signing up for.

Totally understand the concern, but it's not that.  It's a free tick treatment and a Flyer handed at adoption which gives information on how they can sign up for the monthly box.

The huge benefit to my facilitating of these partnerships is that I can tell brands when they are being ridiculous with their expectations and as a pet welfare org founder myself, I'm very in touch with what is and isn't feasible. :)

Like this idea for several reasons but most importantly it helps introduce pet owners to flea & tick control which often doesn't occur until a vet visit . Do hope that this is a well designed program that will increase protection rates.

How does this program handle the need for a prescription from a vet for quality flea/tick products?   Some of the OTCs like fipronil have become totally useless in some areas (shelter vets stopped using it here close to 10 years ago).

All partnerships are great partnerships, however, I wish this program would focus on the more urgent need in the small and rural areas; the desert of resources and the pipeline to large organizations numbers.

The rural City shelters haven't the funds but to Euthanize.  What adoptions they do have are of unneutered/unvaccinated/unvetted, under contract to do so, with what assurance?

The mass majority of these animals are transported to Large Organizations, hundreds of miles away.  We continue to produce them, because programs/resources continue to go to Large Organizations.

There is still profit to be made from rural areas if they could get reasonable rate services.
