  • 1.  Foster Specific Appreciation?

    Posted 08-17-2023 11:10 AM

We have a really small but passionate foster base,  so a few individuals end up doing a ton of work (when a larger program would have the capacity to give them a break).  Many of them don't consider themselves traditional "volunteers" and visit the shelter building pretty rarely. As such, all our "volunteer appreciation" tends to miss them. I'd really love to figure out a way to appreciate our wonderful fosters, but I lack a budget or any means to buy them gifts. Does anyone have any ideas for meaningful ways to thank our fosters besides gifts?

    Thanks y'all!

I'd say take to social media to highlight and show your appreciation for all that they do! It could be a little video segment or interview with them asking questions about why they started fostering, what their favorite part is, stories & pictures of some of their favorite fosters and debunking any misconceptions about fostering. It could be a great way to attract new fosters and you could highlight a variety of fosters both on social media posts and on your organization's website.

Ooooh a video featuring them is a good idea to attract more fosters!
I think most of them are pretty private, so I'll have to hope we get some public speaking fans soon :)

I love the video idea! We highlight our fosters in our monthly newsletter

I recently moved to a new role at my shelter where I'm helping with social media, community relations, etc. and I've been trying to encourage fosters to send photos/videos of their fosters with bios or snippets about why the foster for us to post. It generates interest in our program and pets, and the ones who are participating seem excited to have us post their words!

In the past, we've had a hard time getting fosters to come to any kind of volunteer appreciation event (whereas the onsite volunteers love those events), so I'm definitely interested in other suggestions too!

That's interesting that you're unable to get fosters to come to the appreciation events. I went to my first event that the rescue I volunteer for holds annually & it was packed. I had no idea we had so many fosters & volunteers. What kind of event are you having? I get the impression that my organization does something a little different each year. They had a whole bunch of prizes that were donated & you won a prize by winning at bingo. So, we had several rounds of Bingo that were played & there were multiple prizes to pick from. It was open bar for beer & wine. They also had pasta express pasta dishes & salad served buffet style for dinner.

It was fun & when the prizes ran out, there was an option to play another game where teams of people each had one person on one side & the other team members facing that one person about 10ft apart. The one person had a Dixie cup glued upright to a tongue depressor & that person held the tongue depressor in their mouth. Then the other members of the their team had handfuls of little Marshmellos that they took turns trying to toss into the cup attached to the tongue depressor being held in that person's mouth. The team who got the most Marshmellos in the cup at the end of 10 or so minutes won. It was pretty silly but fun.

It wasn't a formal event or anything but it was a lot of fun with a big turn out.

    Hi Autumn,

One meaningful way would be to send a personalized thank you card to each foster. Will only cost you card and stamp but that hand written card probably would mean the world to those individuals. I know you said lack of budget and no means to buy them gifts but maybe if you know some crafters they could make something for each one as a donation or favor.  Reach out to a couple of crafters so they are only making one thing a piece instead of one person making all. Also not sure if you have the Nextdoor app for your area but I have reached out on there for donations usually folks are pretty helpful. Maybe someone could donate a gift card to McDonalds or a particular fast food someone likes. You never know unless you ask, right?  Just some thoughts

I'd suggest a hand written card or note!
