Here's responses to two questions we didn't have time to get to during the webcast. Thx for answering these, Dr. C!

    1.     How can rescues persuade/advocate that dogs need behavioral medication? A lot of shelters won't send medication home to a rescue and the rescue cannot get an appointment with a vet in a timely matter. What can be done?

In my experience, you can't persuade people who aren't ready and the more you try the more their brains naturally push back.  But you can provide resources for people to learn more about medication options.  That's one of the major reasons we released our free Dose of Hope webinars.  These are a great way for people to learn more about medications and supplements that can help behavior.  You can find them here.  https://behaviorvets.mylearnworlds.com/free-presentations

One option for difficulty getting appointments is to evaluate how many pets the rescue is removing from their shelter partners, talk to the veterinary provider, and see about getting standing appointments on the books with the veterinarian.  This only works if the rescue is conscientious about either cancelling several days ahead of unneeded appointments or if the rescue is willing to pay for appointments they don't keep.  But if availability of veterinary care is a struggle in your area, this is one way you can ensure it.

    2.     Does cost of medications affect adoption rates of the dogs on the long term medications? Are there resources for the adopters to maintain medication management affordably?

Most generic behavior medications are less expensive than many other general care medications, especially if the client is willing to shop around.  If a medication is helping a pet feel better and meet their adopter's expectations better, the small investment in medication will be well worth it for most families.
