I am president of a local, intake prevention organization, Animal Advocates of Greater Lafayette. I wanted to share a successful event we do each spring, called "Get Your Leash On!" This event is about educating our community about the dangers of retractable leashes. This year, we partnered with a local dog rescue and a community dog park. We give out free, safe leashes (and treats!) to anyone who needs one, and it gives us an opportunity to get publicity in our community about why retractable leashes are dangerous. This is an easy educational event that is great for building partnerships, and media coverage.
