Stephanie Mathers runs a great program called Grants 4 Animals. Her monthly newsletter has great information and she has a training program.
Before actually going out and finding grants you should make your organization "grant ready". What does that mean? Most foundations will ask for:
Listing of your board of directors, key staff
Last full year of financials(990), current organizational budget
Vision, Mission, Program listing(possible annual report)
Number of volunteers
501 c3 determination letter(EIN number)
Guidestar link.
It is best to get these items together ahead of time.
Then practice by writing a LOI(letter of interest). This is your pitch letter asking for funding- have folks in your organization read the letter to see if it is compelling.
Then also figure out how to track those pesky grants...
The worst part of dealing with a grant is the final report when you have been tracking it as it is being spent down. Make sure to comply with all of the reporting including the financials(these may be restricted funds).
Grant writing is a great way to raise funds you just have to be willing to put the time in and create relationships with the funders.

Subject: Grant Writing Courses
I just took over grant writing with our organization. I have zero experience and am a little overwhelmed and unsure of how to write the "perfect" grant. I've been in the industry for 12+ years but have never been on this side of things. I was looking for any tips or if anyone knows of free courses/webinars that might be available to assist? I need like a, Intro to Grant Writing 101 class.
