This is excellent advice on having a very specific and measurable project for most grant-making foundations. I've had excellent success in being awarded multiple grants from foundations coast to coast, who previously had NO relationship with my organization. The other advice I would offer is this: Have an electronic and paper file of all the various documents most Foundations want like your IRS letter,; a one-page overview of your organization that includes history, mission statement, organizational structure (board) and financial situation (like our annual budget is $250K and comes from these sources) and finally your outcomes (how many animals did you rescue, spay/neuter etc, whatever your goals are); a background page on your board members and who they are; current operating budget for the organization; a photo sheet of your facility (pictures tell a 1000 words) and some one-page success stories with photos. Along with a cover letter, a project and its budget, I include all these documents with the majority of grants I apply for whether paper on on-line. Best of Success! Grantswriting is worth it but don't be discouraged by turn downs!

be clear and concise- put your results first- industry granting foundations know what the problems are, they want to know that if they give you money, it will make a difference. Set clear targets and report clear results.
Example:
Our targets are: to Spay/neuter 100 cats in zip code 34205 in the next 90 days
to reduce the number of litters of stray kittens from zip code 34205 at Animal Services by 20 percent in the next 6 months
REsults- We altered 102 cats in 90 days- 62 females, 40 males. Of the 62 females, 42% were pregnant or had recently had a litter.
At this time, stray kitten intake is down 8 % over last year, and we will continue to monitor intake over the next 90 days to see how much the sterilization of females in the area impacts the intake rate in zipcode 34205

I am very new to grant writing and I am soliciting any and all advice as to how to get started. I am looking for basic/easy to understand tutorials and information. I am the ED for a mobile spay/neuter nonprofit and all suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thank you!
