Grants, Grants, Grants

Not to increase the competition, but where are you guys finding grants?! I know there are alot of medical cases, of which I've got plenty, but what else have you guys found that has been helpful. Or what types of grants in the future would be helpful?

We have tons of medical dogs right now- from 14 heartworm cases, to 2 TPLOs (ones even a double!), to an eye loss, an ongoing medical mystery, to parvo, to a fracture in the dorsal spine. It's hard to find help for these that aren't sexy emergency cases, and aren't cancer. Especially for my spinal fracture baby that needs ongoing physical therapy or a surgery that is tens of thousands of dollars and out of state. She is doing really well, but paying so much for physical therapy is of course really hard for us- and is hindering her chance at her forever since few people (especially people in Oklahoma) want to take that out.

Are there resources I'm just somehow missing that you all have found helpful?!

Kim - You have to go to the Foundation portion of Candid. They have a grants database and software to search for grants. If you have gotten a gold seal of transparency from Candid, you can get free access to database if you have less than $1M in revenue (I think). Anyway, we have free access to the database and it saves us $2K in the cost of commercial databases. Search "Go for the Gold" in Candid and you should find it.

    Joan -

The key to using the Candid Foundation Database for free is to reach the Gold medallion level to get free use of the basic database. Once you have access to the database, check their education library for recorded courses on how to use the damn thing. It's not the easiest to use, but with the on-line or recorded classes and the regular on-line webinars you can quickly pickup tips and skills for using it.

The key is how you define your search terms - no matter which software you use.

Also look into Instrumentl. It's an expensive to use, but you can get a two week free trial of the software and database for participating in one of their webinars. We found enough possible grantees in the two week trial to begin submitting grant request. In fact our first grant came from a source we found during the trial.

Both Candid and Instrumentl give regular free webinars on how to use the software and how to find the right grant funding for your organization. Take the time and use all the "free" stuff you can and you can find your funding.

    I hope this helps.

Our TN-based cat rescue faces some of the same health situations with our rescue cats, as you do with your rescued dogs.  We started an active grant-seeking program in late 2022 and have had fairly decent success with it.  We've received 14 grants in the past 30 months from 10 different Foundations, with only one being in TN.  The rest are from coast to coast.  Due to our strong communications and reporting to these Foundations we've received multiple grants from 3 of them.   All this has been done by a volunteer. I think our success comes from deeply researching the Foundations and matching their interest with our needs.   We have a successful operational model that attracts their interest (we transport 90% of our cats to New England partners). We're 22 years old, have our own physical facility and operate on a $250k budget ALL from online contributors plus these grants and some in-kind services/supplies.  We have a 5 yr strategic plan to implement a new area of fund development each year starting in  2022.  This year we purchased some email lists of known animal welfare donors and have begun emailing to this list of 7,500 every other week.  We're trying to expand our online donor base.  Since starting in May we have a 6% open rate and very few that have "unsubscribed."  visit our website at purrfectmatchcatrescue.org

Hello, Megan! We've recently been upping our grant writing game and have found the Foundation Center page of Candid FDO Professional super helpful. You need to pay for this one and it's not cheap, but it can be by the month ($220 a month I believe). We paid for two and really buckled down on collecting a ton of data we will use to apply for grants for the rest of the year.

The features and information provided are extensive and you can filter to customize your search includes the grantors financials, history, application process, contact, support strategies, and focus. Also the subjects being funded, size of the grants, the orgs they are going to and their location, and even other orgs similar to them to help expand your search. So much more. It's truly an incredible tool.

It's all very overwhelming especially considering I'm just a volunteer and have no experience with finding grants. I tried looking on candid, but I'm not paying for resources. We are a small nonprofit shelter with very little funding so any money we get in goes to the animals. So if anyone has any other ideas besides candid I'm all ears. Please and thank you.

I have to agree... fundraising is overwhelming!  I had no idea that I would spend so much time learning about grants and how to find/apply for one when I started our non-profit!  Wow.  We are bootstrapping (paying bills out-of-pocket), so no funds for resources like grant databases.

So, this is what I have found helpful:
    1. HelloSkip has free resources to help with common grant questions.  It's called the Grant Vault.  The AI is super helpful in polishing the answers.  They have a small drawing twice a week and also list a new grant that becomes available every so often.

    2. Candid Learning Library is also very helpful with what grant providers are wanting.

    3. Before receiving the Candid database subscription that they gave when I finished the gold seal process, I did a free trial on The Share Way. I bookmarked a list of potential grants.  I do not have a paid membership, so can't use the list to apply.  However, I copy the foundation name and search for the grant online to find the application.  They do allow you to apply for several in-kind donations per month to use for events.  The response there are been great!

    3. I am considering a SkysTheLimit.org mentoring membership.  The free membership is very limited, but shows potential. The response rate is very slow since they are using volunteers.

@Kelly Ford, thank you for the lists!  That is super helpful!

One of the most challenging things I've found is that we are brand new with very little to show for measuring impact.  However, I've been working on my grant and business plan writing skills for 3 months and I am developing a far clearer picture in my mind about the direction we are going and who we serve.

There are zero fast funds.  Applications can take months for review.  This is a long game.  We must be patient, persistent and consistent.

There is something about the Candid Foundation Directory that I do not understand and am hoping someone can help with... I have done my search and added about a dozen prospects to my FDO.  What is the "Projects" tab useful for?  Is that like a campaign on the fundraising platforms?  Then, there is the "Proposals" section.  Is this used when you can't find an online application or as a letter of interest?

    Posted 07-25-2025 04:10 AM

@Kim Jackson it is very overwhelming. We founded our farm and exotic animal sanctuary in 2017 and didn't win a single grant for two years. Finding grants for animals other than cats and dogs adds another layer of challenge. We started reaching out to local community foundations and asking specific questions regarding their grant offerings. Opening a line of communication helped us to write better grants and we have consistantly won grants from three different local community foundations for the past five years.  For me finding time to research and write is the biggest challenge. We are also volunteer run and alot of the day to day care of the 181 animals falls to me and my husband. It leaves little time (and brain cells) for fundraising and grant writing.

We found help where we didn't expect to find it. I set up a profile on volunteermatch.org with several different volunteer opportunities. My goal was to get more daily hands on volunteers to help with the sanctuary chores. I included that we needed help with grant research, grant writing and fundraising. I was surprised when someone reached out to us about grant writing.  She lives in a different state which works fine because everything is completed online.  She has been an amazing help the last two years. In 2023 together we wrote 11 grants and won 5 , in 2024 we wrote 12 and won 8. So far this year we have written 7 and won 4.  She has been a tremendous help.  Sites like volunteermatch can be hit or miss though. We haven't had any success with finding hands on volunteers like we thought we would. You may want to also reach out to any colleges in your area. You may find students who want to beef up their portfolio with volunteer hours.

    @Lisa Burn

Thank you for the words of encouragement.  Our organization was founded 2 years ago this month.

Finding volunteers is harder than finding grants.   I did receive an email late yesterday from Candid. The Foundation was approved for "Go for the Gold"? Because of the platinum seal on guidestar. I have yet to look into that.

I know I need to lower my expectations as they are very high. My husband and I are volunteers.  I assumed it would be easy to find people who would like to volunteer.  Nope. Not a chance.

I've reached out to tge schools and colleges in our area with no luck. It is what it is,  I guess. I will look into the volunteer match. My name may be on there. Ha.

    Thank you again 💓

    Yes, good call, Nicole!

The Spark Good grants are very easy to apply to, and you can win up to 25 $5,000 grants a year. Not just APPLY to 25 a year, but WIN 25 a year. That means you can apply to 25 at once, and if one goes from "pending" to "rejected", you can apply at another one. It includes Walmart stores AND Sam's stores in your area. We've won about five so far this year for $9,000 total.

I had no idea WalMart and Sam's would fund that many grants.  Do they have grant categories or do you just submit your program and hope for the best?  Does each grant (request)  have to link to a store in your area (county, etc.)?  We received a small grant about 10 years ago but they then changed the categories they would fund and we did not qualify.  They seemed to prefer that an animal proposal  have a human focus -- ex:  working with children and animals, etc.  as opposed to a straight TNVR type project.

Yes, they do have categories - one being "Animals and Pets". Each store has their own philanthropic budget, so each grant application needs to be tied to that store. They have a map of the stores in your area, you click on a store, and it shows if they have an available budget, then you fill out an application tied to that particular store.

They MAY still prefer a human focus. Our asks for these particular grants involve low-cost spay neuter services for pet parents so that human element could be tied to the success of the grants we've had this year.

One thing that has helped me is keeping track of their quarter cycles (I'll attach a pic). You can apply to up to 25 each cycle BUT you can also keep applying if any of the stores reject your request. For example If you apply to 25 different stores and two of them reject your application, you can go ahead and apply to two more stores even though you've already applied to 25. I would recommend applying to at least 25 and keep track of when ones are rejected so you can go back and apply to more stores! I would also recommend expanding your applications across your area versus focusing on just your main local stores. We just got accepted for another grant for $1,000 - don't give up!

I just started my position at an Animal Rescue, but in the past have been really successful getting hyperlocal grants. Check with local banks, community resources, other spots like that. Lots of small grants (while way more time consuming) can add up to one big one. It absolutely is tough work though!

I will see if I can find another one I saw; I am constantly looking but have not saved the ones that are not specific to us. It is exhausting!

We've found most of our grant opportunities by keeping an eye on newsletters and social media from pet food companies, foundations, and larger rescues – they often share open applications. Facebook groups for rescues and local community foundations have also been helpful since they post smaller or regional grants that aren't widely advertised.
