  • 1.  increase in intakes post July 4th

I am looking for data on the effect of july 4th on the shelter intakes. Would shelter count as a good place to start? Comparing intakes data on July 4th with other intakes dates in July. What is the return rate to owner of dogs taken in because of fireworks?  Thanks.

I think Shelter animal count is a great place to start.  July 4th is historically the highest intake (and weeks leading up to and after) in all shelters I have been involved in.  Fireworks, Storms and people out of town for vacation all contribute.  Adoptions are slow until school is back in and travel is over.

It will be interesting to see what you find.  We post reminders to put ID on pets so if they are lost/found, the can be reunited easily with their family.

    Hi Amber,

Thank you for your response and reaffirming the observation that intake rockets the week before and after July 4th. I wonder if a survey might also be helpful? I will try to dig deeper into shelter count idea and see how i can best find the data. I look into states that ban fireworks and find out that only Massachusetts is enforcing it. However, they still have public fireworks which is no good. There are cities that ban fireworks for the public but what I love to see is all fireworks being replaced by drone shows which can be fantastic. I also love to see how increase in intake translates into economic impact overall for the shelters. Thanks again for your input.
