  • 1.  Kitten Shower Ideas - Visualizing Cat Overpopulation and the Need for Spay/Neuter

    Hi Everyone!

I'm looking for some ideas to incorporate with our upcoming Kitten Shower.

Our Kitten Shower is an annual event that's hosted each May or June as a way to educate about the upcoming kitten season while collecting donations for the kittens we anticipate caring for. We usually ask for a wish list item or $5 donation for entry. The event features games and activities (kitten trivia, "Guess How Many", "Guess The Price", kitten origami, kitten cornhole, coloring books, and a kitten name idea table), snacks (donated by local businesses), and educational materials (a poster showing how quickly cats can reproduce, a poster showing the growth cycle of kittens age 0-8 weeks to help with ID, and a flowchart explaining what to do if you find kittens outside). We also bring in some vaccinated and healthy kittens from our shelter for people to socialize with, which attracts many of our attendees.

I'd love to find some more educational content that we can incorporate with this family-friendly event. Something that will leave visitors of all ages with a lasting impression about the importance of spaying and neutering cats. We have posters to visualize this, but I think something physical (and something we can actively demonstrate) would go the extra mile. One idea we had is taking marbles to represent the number of homeless kittens who are founds outdoors and what their statistical outcomes may look like. I'm struggling really hard to brainstorm this, so I've decided to consult the masses! If you have an idea for how we can effective demonstrate the speed of feline reproduction, the scale of pet overpopulation, or why having even just one litter can have lasting impacts, I'm all ears! We would like to keep things as light as possible while still being honest, since many attendees bring their young children along.

Our Kitten Shower isn't until mid-May so, we still have some time to plan. Thanks for taking the time to read this! I look forward to hearing your thoughts.

We've used a projection of how the offspring of two unsterilized cats would fill a sports stadium after a few short years, can't remember where we got the statistics but it's a great visual and should be easily searchable.

Lauren Green also asked about education ideas for their kitten shower. I can no longer find her thread to reply. I'd recommend  her contacting the organization "Kitten Coalition" for ideas. They're an amazing non-profit with great resources. I have also seen articles in the ASPCA website, in particular "Kitten Bottle Feeding Guide.  Hope this helps!

The ASPCA has amazing educational resources. One in particular is "Kitten Bottle Feeding Guide" that may be helpful. I'd also suggest reaching out to Kitten Coalition, a non-profit with excellent resources in every aspect of raising a healthy kitten.  They have a 3-part webinar series titled"The Art of Raising a Happy, Healthy Kitten." I like their colorful flier on "Cat Language" that depicts what the various stances and actions of a cat are telling you.
