  • 1.  Maddie's Insights webcast October 12, 2023: Examining the Relationship between BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, And People of Color) Communities and Their Companion Animals

Catherine Kisavi-Atatah Ph.D. shares the findings of her publication, Examining the Relationship between BIPOC Communities and Their Companion Animals. This study explored the relationship between BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) communities with their companion animals, using Attachment Theory as a lens of analysis. Findings suggest that public and private policy decision-makers should develop and implement holistic, across-the-board, companion animal policies that are user-friendly to all.

This webcast was recorded on Thursday, October 12, 2023

Watch the recording on Maddie's University

    Learning Objectives:

    •         Understand the complexities of the multifaceted aspects of the relationship between Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) communities and their companion animals, including historical, cultural and socio-economic factors
    •       Identify the unique challenges and barriers that BIPOC communities encounter in accessing veterinary care, resources and   support for their companion animals, and evaluate the implications for both the animals and communities
    •        Understand the significance of cultural competency and diversity in veterinary medicine and animal welfare; analyze how these   factors influence the provision of care and support to BIPOC individuals and their communities
    •          Evaluate policy recommendations and practical insights presented in the paper to better support BIPOC communities in their     relationship with companion animals, and consider the broader implications for public policies, animal welfare organizations     and community initiatives

I am a student of Dr. Atatah's and I absolutely love this research study! I'm not a big fan of pets, but what stood out to me the most is that Dr. Atatah first conducted this research during Covid-19 which lets me know that everything she presented  on this zoom has been extremely examined to the best of its ability & knowledge. Overall, I loved the presentation and I am now considering getting a companion animal.  - Kerys W

    Hello,

I am Kareena Blissett, a current student of Dr Catherine Atatah and I would just love to say that this was a great webinar session.  I had a few cats living with us when I was a kid and they brought so many joy to me as a child playing with them. It was emotional listening to your presentation especially when you spoke about the cat that was missing but who came home eventually. Animals are great pets to have around as they can help with being a support dog or just providing the love and companionship you may never know you needed. Great presentation!

Good Afternoon, I'm one of Dr.Atatah's students and I believed that this research study was absolutely amazing.  Personally I love pets and think that they have a big effect in our lives. The main thing that stood out to me in this research study was how many people are passionate about their relationships with their pets. In conclusion I was amazed with her research study and hope many were touched just let me from this presentation.

    Hello,

I am a student of Dr. Atatah's and i was very intrigued by the research study. I have had many pets in my household over the years and it was interesting to hear how different cultures and historical factors play a role for pets and families. I enjoyed listening to Dr. Atatah speak about how cultural backgrounds create different worldviews and how the pets still tend to be attached to the owner(s)  regardless of culture. I also agree that SPAH would benefit from learning more about this study to gain more insight on animal welfare.
