  • 1.  Medical Surrenders and re-adoption

    Posted 06-30-2025 01:40 PM

Our organization is developing policy regarding medical surrenders.

    Topics for discussion:

    • Does your organization accept medical surrenders?
    • Does your organization allow readoption?
    • If your organization allows owners to re-adopt- what criteria do you use?
    • Do you charge an additional fee on top of adoption fee to help cover medical expenses if you allow re-adoption?
    • What kind of criteria do you use to determine  who is treated/ who is euthanized.
    • If you don't accept medical surrenders-- what options do you give people?

For reference- nearest low cost veterinary option is 2hrs away.

For us, it all depends on vet availability. We are a 501c3 non profit animal shelter with government contract and do have vets on staff but their availability varies. When we are able, we offer a temporary medical surrender program where, if approved, owners can surrender their pet to us for lifesaving medical treatment and, once the pet is cleared, they are able to readopt their pet. We do not charge adoption fees but do have owners reimburse us for the cost of the medical treatment or outside vet bills if outside vet care was required. We accept Scratch Pay, though none of the owners we have asking for help are approved. So we also offer payment plans through VetBilling when they are not able to pay upfront.

This is a very generous program. Is there a reason you are not able to just directly offer the medical service? The Kauai Humane Society was in a similar situation a few years ago and our ever gracious vet would just schedule the surgery or medical care as a service with a fee rather than intake/outcome.  Thankfully, we were able to launch our Community Care Center, our low-cost non emergency vet clinic, two days a week as the demand for services was so high.

We ask for surrender as so many of the grant programs for medical expenses currently don't pay for owned pets.  We previously did a low cost program but backed off when we lost our second vet-- and are trying to figure out how to bring back being able to offer services in a sustainable manner.

Depending on their medical reason for surrender, you are welcome to share my organization's information! It is called The Bobo Fund and is a nonprofit that helps pay for medication for pets with chronic medical conditions like heart disease, diabetes, etc, for low-income pet owners... We're trying to get the word out there for intake diversion! Message if you have any questions.
