    Hello all,

My name is Traci I moved to Tulum Mexico 4 years ago. I opened my bakery and immediately started to give back to the community by getting involved with pet community.  First was a dog walk, then rescue work followed. I managed to get up to 5 dogs and 15 cats in my house. I also opened the bakery to fostering kittens. I put up kennels in the big windows where people can see the kittens and we get all of them adopted. I also take in donations at the bakery to share with families in need and to give to the local low cost clinic that put on monthly bazaar to raise funds for the clinic. I started my own whatsapp group and built a website to answer the many many questions I get from tourists trying to help the neverending street dog and cat population or the many transient people who come thru Tulum who become independent fosters or rescuers. The WhatsApp group is growing and doing great work in town.  We have many individuals doing thier own rescue work and fostering. The issue I have found after 4 years of this madness is I need help with fundraising, organization, and partnership with organizations in the US and Canada to get  some much needed resources.  I have some ideas that I know would work just don't know how.  I've tried to join up many organization in the states to add our fosters up for adoption but because we are in Mexico it becomes an issue during signing up process. Would like to be more organized with the donations, maybe start a donation box system to collect to sell in a thrift store so our individuals don't need to rely so heavily on crowdfunding.  Can anyone help me navigate any of this?

The Pets for Life Community Outreach Toolkit and Sustainability Guide both have good sections about donors, fundraising, and supporting and sustaining your work, so hopefully there are some useful strategies. You could also maybe try reaching out to the Humane Society International Mexico office in CDMX and see if they have any resources for rescues in the country?

    Hi Traci,
You'd first need to find out what the laws are where you are regarding soliciting donations.  Do you have to be a nonprofit, for example?   If you don't have to be a nonprofit, then you might have tax implications to consider for yourself -- i.e., if the $ people give you are considered taxable income.  There are lots of ways to raise funds but first make sure you are following the local laws.  I believe you could also become part of an already established non-profit if they are willing to be your 'umbrella'. But that would make you and them accountable to each other to some degree.
Let me know if you have other questions.
    Best,
    Rain
