  • 1.  new born puppies

    we have  week-old newborn puppies mom and puppies are doing great,
    but the puppies do not make any kind of sound at all.
    we think they may be deaf,  if they are we are not sure if the families that are lined up to give them forever homes will take them.

    they were born about 2 weeks early

    is there a way to find out if they are?

    Hi Heather,

    I'm not a vet or reproduction expert but, since they were born two weeks premature, is it possible that they haven't developed the ability to make sound yet? All puppies are born deaf but they still make noise so not sure their silence is indicative that they are deaf. Their ears will open between about 16 and 22 days old. You can test them then by making a loud, sudden noise and see if they startle.

    thank you for the insight, we will try to see if they startle. even when they are picked up they do not wine for mom, or any kind of sounds,  

    mom is pyrenees,  we are in the works to have dad

    You know, it just occurred to me that since they were born premature, their ears will open later than the usual 16-22 days old.  Just something to keep in mind when you startle test them. Regardless, you should be able to tell/test them before they go home at ~8-10 weeks.

    we have a update, we do now have both parents, and dad is death has been from puppy hood.

    puppies  are moving around and still no sounds from them.
