    Hello!

I lead a 501 (c)(3) animal shelter in the process of planning a new shelter. One question my staff, board and I have been discussing is on-site housing for staff weather-related emergencies (winter storms). Two options discussed have been a sleeping room inside the shelter or completely separate free-standing building, possibly as a multi-unit structure that could provide rental income. We do not have a staff housing option in our current facility. Does anyone else have on-site housing? TIA

Congratulations! We are building a new shelter also! I like your thought about being able to have staff stay during an emergency. We do not have a separate sleeping facility. We do have a community education room, and I think we will address that by adding a couple of cots and bedding to one our of our storage areas. We could then set those up in the education room if needed. Good luck! Feel free to DM if you'd like to share details on the new design.

Thank you, Renee! One of the questions that has come up is how building codes may change with sleeping quarters on site. I am in the process of checking in this.
