Hi, I'm looking to start a nonprofit organization/shelter to house pets for people who are fleeing domestic violence and people who are entering inpatient treatment for either mental health treatment or substance use treatment. I have years of case management and community mental health experience, I've been a pet owner since I can remember and grew up around kennels as my father was a kennel master for the Air Force. But that has been the extent of my shelter experience thus far and I'm really wanting to expand my knowledge base (and I do plan on trying to get some volunteer time in at a shelter as soon as I fix my transportation issue. I've been looking through some of the courses and started adding some to my list of things to study. But I wanted to see if anyone had suggestions on the best starting point for someone like myself.

I love this idea! What a wonderful way to help both the animal and people in need. When we first started our farm and exotic animal sanctuary we had an amazing mentor that was willing to share her knowledge with us. We also had volunteered at her sanctuary for a few years which, for me, gave me the confidence to start our nonprofit. I would also suggest finding someone who can help with the legal aspects. We were lucky to find a local attorney who loved to barter.

Hi Craig- This is so great! There's a fairly new platform out there called BestyBNB which is an online system based on this very thing. It allows people to sign up to foster short term to support people who are in need due to DV, hospitalization, etc.

My advice to you is first and foremost to look into insurance. I believe there may be only one company that will currently insure foster programs. It's really challenging because fostering dogs does sometimes lead to bites and insurers want nothing to do with it. As the person running the foster program, the liability falls on you. In order for you to determine whether your concept is feasible, I would 100% start there.

If you get past that hurdle, I would consider talking to a few of foster coordinators (shelter and/or private rescue) to get an idea of the work involved . For starters, you need to appropriately match pets with fosters. You will run into a wide range of skill sets and you can't just put any dog or cat into any home. You will also be the go to organization 24/7 to support your fosters, including issues, concerns, and medical emergencies.

Also consider what to do if the temporary need becomes long term as I've seen many times, and what happens if the animal needs medical care while your client is not the primary caretaker. It's important to have all of this planned out ahead of time and put into legal documents.

This would fill such a crucial gap. I work on the streets with so many who won't get the help they need because they have no place for their pet. It sounds like you have a bit of a learning curve from the fostering animals side so I suggest you continue to do what you are doing right here and ask lots of questions!

Thanks so much, I'll definitely look into this. I'm almost thinking about trying to make a shelter myself for longer term boarding instead of utilizing individual fosters. And hopefully find volunteers and then full-time staff that can make sure we have 24/7 support and care for the animals. I'm still kind of in the early planning and development, and not 100% deadlocked into any particular structure, so I'm open to all suggestions and feedback, so I greatly appreciate all of this.

Just went back and re-read your post and I missed the part where you said you want to kennel them - not foster them. haha
Volunteering at a shelter sounds like a good place to start!

I'm sure others will have better advice, but I wanted to say I think your idea is a much-needed and honorable one. However, starting a nonprofit is not easy, and the first step should be finding support in the community. You will need a board of directors to register as a nonprofit, and a mission statement to grow from. Once you have others on board, sit down and consider the logistics of your mission and how to achieve it. You may be able to partner with an existing shelter if your mission is to provide support for the animals. Good luck!

Thanks so much, I appreciate the support and advise. I know it's going to be a lot of work and I've got a lot to learn, but I'm looking forward to it. I'm starting a graduate certificate program for nonprofit leadership and management later this month to start getting some more fundamentals in the nonprofit aspect of things. I worked doing crisis response for rape crisis/domestic violence shelters and mental health case management for a mental health clinic and helped write some grants for new programs we wanted to launch, so at least everything isn't completely new to me. I'm still debating which town I want to setup shop in. I know I want it to be in Eastern KY, bc it's more rural and I want to help contribute to new job growth and help economic growth. There's a couple towns with colleges, which I'm wanting to be near, because I feel like they could help with finding volunteers if needed in the early stages. One is a bit more central in the State which would make it easier to help cut down on commute times if I'm trying to reach the entire state. Once I can make up my mind on location, I plan to definitely reach out to the local shelter to coordinate and hopefully volunteer some time with them so I can get my hands on some of the everyday aspects of pet care and logistics of running a shelter. And eventually I'd like to reach out to other shelters and maybe come up with a program that might allow owners to drop their pets off at their local shelter for a day or two, just to allow us some time to respond so I'm not zipping back and forth across the state nonstop.

Hi Craig, what a wonderful thing you're doing! When I started my nonprofit, the first thing I did was connect with a couple of Score mentors. Score is part of the Small Business Administration; it's a wonderful organization designed to help people start their businesses, and it's all free! The first thing they had me do (and helped me with) was a business plan. They were absolutely instrumental in helping me.   www.score.org

I started by outlining a super clear mission and vision, then found a few people who shared that passion to help build momentum and keep things moving forward together.

Have you heard of Score mentors? Score is part of the Small Business Administration, it's free, and they have mentors in every aspect. I would have never been able to start my nonprofit without their help. Website is score dot org

And what a wonderful thing you're doing!
