  • 1.  Purchasing a new transport/adoption vehicle

We have received a grant to purchase a new transport/adoption vehicle.  Will be diesel, truck chassis and without permanent stainless kennels.  Anyone have a company they've worked with that knows animal transport? Other suggestions on accessories/set-ups you like or dislike? Thanks!

Congrats on your new transport/adoption vehicle! I'm really only familiar with transporting in a van type setup- we have Ford transit high top vans, but have also utilized dodge promaster- I'm not sure if it's relevant but we really like the Ruffland brand kennels for their durability/easy to stack if you have height, and the added bit of safety with their tough exterior. I'm not sure what your rear AC/heat situation is but we had to get a rear AC/heat unit to keep things comfortable in the TX heat. Digital thermometers to monitor temps in the back while on the road are super helpful, safety/travel kits for drivers are also extremely helpful for the vehicle (fix a flat) and for the animals. Karen.walsh@aspca.org may be a good resource for you, although the ASPCA also utilizes cargo vans, she is extremely knowledgeable about transport protocols and may be able to help you with tips on your new vehicle. You all do great work at Acadiana- keep it up!

Thanks for sharing, Clare. The Ruffland kennels and rear AC/heat unit tips are really useful, as well as monitoring temps with digital thermometers. I've also seen groups use ventilation fans and backup power for airflow, plus safety kits for both animals and drivers. I'm preparing a trip to France with my pet, so these travel setup ideas are especially helpful.
