    Raffles!

Animal Life Savers in New Jersey sponsors raffles that are fun, inexpensive and a lively way to raise money and awareness for its services… in a good year we've raised around $15,000! Occasionally, we've partnered with a retailer to help sell the tickets. We raised over $2,500 at that event alone.

So, if all of you dedicated animal angels out there haven't sponsored one yet, you might find it's great for raising money and advertising what your own agency does for animals in need in your community.

Here are some great tips for a raffle:

    1)    First, play by the rules: all animal welfare groups should check online to see what laws regulating raffles and raffle ticket sales exist where they will be selling the tickets. They are usually administered by state and county governments. Apply in advance, as this may take some time.

    2)    Once you have the license to raise money, it's easy:  Tickets can be sold at any event including adoptions, local holiday gift markets or participating local businesses, such as a pet store or a veterinary clinics. Next, price your tickets affordably ($5.00 each, for example, but naturally your organization can choose its own amount). Next, if you have one, use a mailing list of donors and adopters to increase awareness of the raffle. If you have volunteers, they can start selling the tickets a few months before the drawing that you can advertise on social media.

    3)    In a 50/50 raffle, the winner gets half the proceeds of the raffle. In most cases, the winner might donate some of the winnings back to the organization. The money we raise goes to TNR efforts in the local community and to help sick or injured animals get care at a vet.  In a "tricky tray" raffle, which is a bit like a raffle and an auction combined, prizes have a separate ticket bucket. This breaks up entrants for each prize, increasing the odds of winning. Please look this up online, as it's simple to do but more complex to explain.

Besides the money raised, as noted earlier, raffles let a big part of your community know about the need for animal rescue services in your community and the fine work that your organization does.

    And, besides, it's fun!

This sounds so straight forward, potentially a time suck with approval from the state if necessary.

Thank you very much for posting this!

You're welcome. No, I don't believe the application process for fundraising

takes too long. And it's required by law.

To clarify, a license is required in NJ (per your post), but that's not always the case. In Florida, non-profit organizations (that are tax-exempted with the IRS) are exempt from the state gambling laws, thus allowing raffles without additional licensing or permits. There are requirements, of course, such as the organization being registered with the FDACS and having a no purchase to enter procedure.

Yes, thanks for reiterating: always check with local government for laws regarding anything that has to do with fundraising.

But even in NJ, where a permit is needed if you intend to raise a certain amount of money, the application, I believe, is fairly simple and the fee is very low. But, again, if you don't need a permit, that makes it easer. And again, in NJ, the permit law applies to raising above a certain dollar threshold. I don't want to quote it here if it's changed, but if you raise less than that you may not need a permit, at least in NJ.

Personally, I think it's best to have the permit in NJ so no one mistakenly violates the law and so you can raise as much as you may need.

Just know the law where you fundraise and you can't go wrong.

We just recently did our second annual silent auction. We send our volunteers out in their community to get donated items, everything from a diamond ring to handmaid goods to gift cards.

For the large items such as the diamond ring, we sell raffle tickets for. For the the smaller items we use a online auction ton site and run it for a week. This year we raised approximately 13k!

It is such a fun way to raise money and engages our supports. It's also a great way for the local businesses to show their support for our dog rescue.

We give thanks to our local businesses by showing the items they donated on social media while also creating excitement for the auction.

    Hi Genie,

This is a wonderful idea. I am trying to think of new ways to help bring in funds for our potcakes in Saint Lucia. We need so much help to get them to safety and adopted here, so I am going to use this idea for our rescue! Really appreciate your post!
