Roller bars for yard fencing, might be called coyote bars

    Hello,

At this point our shelter has no safe outdoor, off-leash fencing area for dogs who are potential (or reported) jumpers. I thought I saw something in Maddie's about ways to address secure fencing for these dogs but haven't been able to make my way back to it. Any pointers will be appreciated.

I've heard of what you're talking about as a method to keep wildlife and cats from crossing a fence. Interesting as a method of containment!

A more conventional option, I think, would be to have enclosures with a ceiling. E.g. a chainlink run with a chainlink roof.

    Thank you, James.

The enclosures we have that are only 6 feet high are set up in irregular shapes - using the four sides of what is sold as a 10x10 kennel; they've worked well for our application but don't lend themselves to a chain link ceiling.

    Hi Eudora,

I have seen coyote / fence rollers used successfully to contain dogs in play yards and outdoor portions of primary enclosures. I'm unsure how the maintenance, cost, or environmental impact compare to a fenced ceiling. However, for larger yards, ceilings may not be practical. One fencing company we used called them "powder coated coyote rollers."

YouTube has DIY instructions for making them. I'm unsure the safety/efficacy ... but could be something you try on one area to see how it works!

How wonderful that you are coming up with a way to provide more dogs with outdoor enrichment.

    Thank you, Renee,

DIY is definitely a better price point for us. It looked doable - I'll be looking more closely at the options. I appreciate your encouragement.

BTW, we've set up shared enclosures directly off the back gate of the outer kennels for almost all our dogs - with $ from a Maddies grant!!  Being able to get the dogs who are harder to handle right outside without having them run the hallway gauntlet has been a game changer. But I'm working with a dog right now who presents some special challenges and I want to be able to let her into the small outer enclosure off leash. We don't have any evidence she's a jumper, but we want to cover all bases to keep her contained and safe.

    Thanks again,

    Eudora

I just copied this from a review on the internet so consider the source. "I talked to a fish and game guy about it and he said that they only work if it's over 8' tall and they can't dig under your fence. You basically need a cinder block fence that goes down at least 3' below the surface because the second they can't go over, they will go under. You also have to have them installed on the entire perimeter of your fence. Coyotes are extremely smart and will T-Rex your fence, looking for a gap. They can also climb an inside corner, so you have to block those with some sort of protrusion. If you want to coyote -proof your house, your backyard basically looks like a prison yard. "

    Hello!

The coyote rollers definitely will work as someone recommended, capped top being the best option. Another option to think about would be what they call kick-ins. Used frequently to keep cats in yards (including big cats at wildlife facilities) and used in wild canine outdoor spaces. They are about 1-2 feet of fencing at the top angled back into the fenced area. I added a link to show you what it looks like without the fencing attached.

    Thank you, Johanna,

The kick-ins look like an interesting option. We have one set of enclosures that shares one wall - so maybe kick-ins on all sides but the shared wall, which cold get the roller bars, would be a good combo. Food for thought!

I appreciate the idea, thank you!

We use the rollers around the play yard fences and as an extra security measure around the outside perimeter fence. We've only had 1 go over since installing and she cleared it.  We made our own rollers- it was easy taking 2 different sizes of pvc pipe--inserting the smaller size into larger one and then running a cable thru the smaller pvc. You will need to get extensions to attach to the fence--cable has to be kept tight, no sagging so the pvc will roll. Saved quite a bit doing it ourselves.
